Greetings ESA Microbial Ecology Section Members!
We hope you are staying safe and healthy! We bring you ongoing activities and upcoming activities from the section! We look forward to seeing you at #ESA2021 Annual Meeting - fully online.
Member Support | We continue to support ESA meeting participation, and this year we awarded a travel award to graduate student Clara Qin. If you are still in need of support, please email us HERE.
ESA Microbial Ecology Section Supports NSURP | "NSURP is a community-driven initiative to create rewarding remote summer research opportunities for BIPOC and Latinx undergraduate students in the microbial sciences and computational immunology." We have set aside section funds to support participation of NSURP mentees to attend our annual conference.
Call for ESA Microbial Ecology Leadership Nominations | We want YOUR input on the leadership team! Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague for (i) student rep, (ii) DEI rep, and (iii) secretary. More information HERE. See the ESA Micro website for duties and expectations. Nominations Due by 9 PM CT on Aug 2nd. Complete nomination info HERE.
#ESA2021 Annual Meeting Highlights and Reminders | We are organizing virtual activities for our section this year! Check out the details below!
Clara Qin is a PhD candidate in the Environmental Studies department at UC Santa Cruz, studying microbial macroecology. Clara is interested in the biogeography of soil fungi, and particularly in how fungal traits interact with climate to affect fungal species distributions. At ESA, Clara will be presenting my research on the range sizes and niche breadths of North American soil fungi across different functional groups. Clara and advisor Dr. Kai Zhu will present on neonMicrobe, a new R package that we developed with several colleagues for easier access to the microbial amplicon sequence data from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON).
Are you an NSURP Mentor this summer? If so, we will cover the #ESA2021 meeting costs for your mentee to attend the meeting and participate in our mixer. We only ask that your mentee prepares a 2 min short presentation for our mixer so that we can all hear about the amazing work they have done. If you are interested, send us an email: MicrobialEcology-moderator@community.esa.org. In addition, we plan to support NSURP interns to attend/present during future ESA conferences as well.
If you are interested in learning more about this program, please visit nsurp.org. With the immense success of this program, we hope to amplify opportunities between potential ME section mentors (faculty and grad students alike) and potential mentees to participate in NSURP next year! In support of this action, ME section member (and former Chair) Ariane Peralta will organize a platform for Microbial Ecology Section members to virtually gather, share experiences, and talk through best practices to support virtual research experiences.
