Cala Salitrona Beach October 5th 2019

On 1st October it was my birthday so we went sailing. We got up to 4 knots and went where the wind took us which in this instance was west to Cala Salitrona Beach. What a beautiful place. Clear water, no one else around and a couple of buoys so you don't disturb the sea bed by anchoring. There is only room for two boats so it's a good place to go in the winter months when fewer people are sailing. The wind dropped and it looked like we were in for a calm night then out of nowhere came a 2 meter swell! That made it pretty rocky but by morning it was calm again so time for a hike.

A beautiful dawn. The swell almost gone.

There was a path up behind the beach just so long as you like climbing and wear walking boots. And you can go as far as you like as the hills roll on and on. It was quite hot (24 degrees) but not stifling and we soon got a good view of the bay and the boat. The most striking thing for me was bush after bush of rosemary. I love the way herbs and flowers that I've had to carefully nurse in England just grow wild in these warmer climates. Beautiful.

Talking of herbs - food. A quick one. Try pimientos if you get a chance. Olive oil, salt and small green pimientos. Just throw them in the frying pan. Lunch.

Pimientos

We spent a second night at anchor before sailing back to the marina. Steve spent quite a bit of time trying to spray the flies with mosquito repellant which didn't really work. The flies are too quick and too plentiful. I guess that's the price you pay for living a life in the sun. I just enjoyed the swimming, lying on deck and reading. It really didn't feel like October!

Last night was the first meeting this year of the Cartagena liveaboards. Most of us were new to the marina but some have been based here for years. All agreed this is a good place to spend the winter with lots to see in the town and surrounding area. Ibiza is 24 hours away, too. Happy winter sailing I hope.
