"Growing up in the small southwest Texas town of Uvalde gave me a real appreciation for the rural country life in the semi-arid southwest. Since my father ran service stations I was interested in subjects like rural country stores, old gas pumps as well as the old vehicles, and other related equipment. The graying of the cedar fence posts, old lumber on the barns, the rusting barbed wire, and tin roofs and dry leather of saddles were things I enjoyed seeing".
As an active artist through much of his life, E.M. Sutherland’s work in both pen & ink and watercolor, renders the rural life of Texas in vivid detail, allowing for rich textures and colors throughout his landscapes. His work focuses primarily on subjects involving country landscapes, wildlife, and small town life as a way of documenting places that are slowly disappearing.
Remember When
Never certain of what will catch his eye, Sutherland bases his artistic vision on a single, guiding princriple: enjoyment of his craft. "Through it all," he says, "I paint subjects and places that excite me enough to want to paint them."
