This week we saw over 270 family members attend our Amazing Family Learning days. We hope that you enjoyed the experience of being with your child and seeing first hand how they learnt. I wonder what stage of learning your child was engaged in:

ISP Parent Survey · Encuesta para padres de ISP

Can we please ask you to complete the ISP survey by Friday 20th December. There is only one question: How likely are you to recommend the school to other parents choosing a school for their child/children?

Me gustaría solicitarles que por favor rellenen esta encuesta de ISP como muy tarde el próximo Viernes 20 de Diciembre. Sólo tienen que contestar a una pregunta: ¿qué probabilidad existe de que recomendasen nuestro colegio a otra familia que esté buscando para sus hijos?

Preparing for the Exams Ahead · Preparar los exámenes

Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 will, in January 2020, be either sitting important official exams, such as resits or mock exams. The reason we do mocks is that it gives students an idea of what the real exam feels like and it gives us, parents and teachers an idea of how they are progressing. As a way of preparing students for these important exams, it is important to know how and when to revise.

Los alumnos de Year 11, Year 12 y Year 13 van a afrontar en Enero de 2020 exámenes oficiales muy importantes, se presentan por segunda vez o hacen los "mocks" (simulacros de examen o exámenes de prueba). El motivo por el que se hacen exámenes de prueba es que les da a los alumnos una idea de lo que es un examen real y nos da a los padres y a los profesores una idea de cómo están progresando. Es importante que los alumnos se preparen para estos exámenes tan relevantes, por lo que hay que saber cómo y cuándo repasar.

Revision should cover two things, making sure knowledge is certain and making sure it can be reproduced in the most effective way in the conditions which will be in front of them on the day of their exam. During the Christmas break, every youngster has the chance to make real progress with their revision. As a guide, Cohort 11, 12 and 13 learners will be expected to spend a minimum of 30 hours revising during the holiday. I recommend the following pattern once the holiday begins:

El repaso debería cubrir dos áreas: asegurarse de que el conocimiento está asentado y asegurarse de que ese conocimiento se puede reproducir de la forma más efectiva en las condiciones que se van a encontrar el día del examen. Durante las vacaciones de Navidad, los chicos tienen una oportunidad muy valiosa de hacer progresos de verdad con su repaso. Como guía orientativa, los alumnos de Year 11, Year 12 y Year 13 deberían emplear un mínimo de 30 horas de estudio durante las vacaciones. Me gustaría recomendar el siguiente esquema para el periodo de vacaciones:

Session 1 (Sesión 1)

• 9:00 am - Subject 1 (Asignatura 1)
• 9.30 a.m. - Subject 2 (Asignatura 2)
• 10.00 a.m. - Break (Descanso)
• 10.15 a.m. - Subject 3 (Asignatura 3)
• 10.45 a.m. - Subject 4 (Asignatura 4)

Session 2 (Sesión 2)

• 1.30 p.m. - Subject 5 (Asignatura 5)
• 2.00 p.m. - Subject 6 (Asignatura 6)
• 2.30 p.m. Finish (Fin del día)

If this pattern is followed Monday to Friday the two weeks of the holiday, every student will have completed thirty hours of revision; they will also be learning at times of the day that correspond with the times when their examinations will take place. This helps to prepare them for the intellectual and emotional challenge iGCSE and A Level final exams pose. As you can see, however, such a programme still leaves youngsters with a great deal of time to relax and enjoy their holiday – an important part of preparing for the tests ahead.

Si se sigue este patrón de Lunes a Viernes, durante las dos semanas de vacaciones, los alumnos habrán cumplido con 30 horas de repaso. También estarán estudiando en horarios del día que se corresponden con horarios en los que tienen lugar los exámenes. Así les ayuda a prepararse para el reto intelectual de los IGCSEs y los A Levels finales. Como pueden ver, este programa deja tiempo en cualquier caso a los chicos para que se relajen y disfruten de las vacaciones, una parte importante de la preparación de los exámenes que tienen por delante.

The key to successful revision is to make the process of revision active; successful techniques include: · La clave para el repaso efectivo es convertirlo en una tarea activa. Las técnicas que así lo garantizan son:

• Mind mapping a topic to see the connections between different ideas and concepts · Hacer mapas mentales de un tema para comprobar las conexiones entre distintas ideas y conceptos
• Answering past examination questions or questions in revision guides – an especially important technique when trying to re-produce knowledge under the pressure you will find in exams · Responder a preguntas de otros exámenes o de las guías de repaso (y es especialmente útil intentar reproducir los conocimientos bajo la presión que una persona encuentra durante un examen)
• Using the internet to search for key topics, making notes on the topics you are revising · Usar internet para buscar temas importantes, tomar notas de los temas que se están repasando
• Using voice recording apps available for mobile devices may well help some of our youngsters to record key points · Usar aplicaciones de grabación de voz en el móvil puede ayudar a algunos chicos a fijar ciertos temas
• Making cards up of key words, with definitions written on the back of the cards · Confeccionar tarjetas con palabras clave y las definiciones en el reverso
• Explaining revision to someone at home or working alongside a friend who is revising the same topic. This could be an excellent use of ‘Face-Time’ · Explicar los conceptos a alguien en casa o con algún amigo que está estudiando el mismo tema. Se le puede dar un uso excelente a Facetime para ello
• Using a highlighter pen to make key words and phrases stand out in a text · Usar un fluorescente para subrayar palabras y frases que deben destacarse en un texto
• Using flowcharts to remember a process · Emplear diagramas de flujos para recordar procesos

Christmas Food Drive · Recogida de alimentos navideña

We would like to take this opportunity to appeal to your generosity and support for our annual Food Drive for the Fundación Escuela de Solidaridad which the secondary students have organised each Christmas for the last 11 years. The Foundation takes in people who are living in difficult circumstances and for one reason or another are not able to stay in their own home. These may be people suffering from abuse, who have been thrown out of their home, mothers with young children in an emergency situation, young adults at risk etc..

Nos gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para apelar a su generosidad y que apoyen nuestra Recogida de Alimentos anual, que se entrega a Fundación Escuela de Solidaridad y que han organizado los alumnos de Secundaria durante los últimos 11 años en fechas navideñas. La Fundación acoge a personas que viven circunstancias difíciles y que por una razón u otra no pueden estar en sus propios hogares. Pueden ser personas que han sufrido abusos, que han sido expulsadas de sus casas, madres con niños pequeños en situación de emergencia, jóvenes en riesgo, etc.

They require non-perishable food items but they are also in desperate need of hygiene and cleaning products such as: shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, nappies No 1 and 2, washing powder and fabric softener and rubbish bags.

Les hacen falta alimentos no perecederos pero también necesitan de forma apremiante productos de higiene y limpieza como gel, champú, pasta y cepillos de dientes, desodorante, pañales (Tallas 1 y 2), detergente, suavizante y bolsas de basura.

We are asking students to bring in either one of the above items or a non-perishable food item before Thursday 19th December when the Foundation will come and collect the items.

Rogamos a nuestros alumnos que traigan algunos de los artículos indicados o alimentos no perecederos antes del Jueves 19 Diciembre, día en el que la Fundación va a venir al colegio y se llevará la recogida.

Learning the 3R's · Aprendiendo las 3R

Generation of waste is one of the main environmental problems of our society. On Tuesday, 17th December, the students in Foundation will be having a visit from the Málaga Environmental Health Department who have developed a programme adapted to all age groups. This programme, taught through various games and activities will explain to the children the rules about the 3R`s, Reducing, Reusing and Recycling products when they reach the end of the life span.

La generación de basura es uno de los principales problemas medioambientales de nuestra sociedad. El Martes 17 de Diciembre los alumnos de Foundation (Infantil) van a recibir la visita del Área de Sostenibilidad Medioambiental del Ayuntamiento de Málaga, que ha desarrollado un programa adaptado a la edad de los niños de Infantil. En la sesión se realizarán varios juegos y actividades que servirán para explicar a los niños la regla de las "3R: reducir, reusar y reciclar", aplicable a todos los productos cuando alcancen su ciclo de vida.
