Task force created to monitor the controversial Koch donation

The Utah State University Faculty Senate voted to create a task force charged with monitoring the $25 million gift donated summer 2017 by the Charles Koch Foundation.

Little-known housing law restricts number of residents per housing unit

When choosing housing for school some students opt to rent a home in Logan city, but they are often unaware of the many obligations and laws associated with doing so. A particular Logan zoning law regarding the amount of people per household has caused trouble for USU renters and city landlords alike.

Woodworking away: Lee Welch alumnus feature

When Lee Welch, a 76 year-old Utah State University alumnus, built a new house with his wife, Welch did all of the woodwork, including coffered ceilings and the garage doors.

The new house also includes a large work space for Welch’s woodwork.

Utah State upsets Boise State 78-75 to advance to MW semifinals

Utah State trailed Boise State by 10 points with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

The Aggies stared straight at the end of their season and said, “not today.”

Aggie head coach Tim Duryea fired

Utah State men’s basketball head coach Tim Duryea has been released from his duties as head coach according to a release from the USU Athletic Department.

Duryea, who coached the Aggies to their first ever Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals appearance on Saturday, was informed this afternoon that he will no longer be coaching the team. Players were informed just minutes before the news became public.

Mitt Romney visits USU

Mitt Romney, United States Senate-elect for the state of Utah, spent an afternoon teaching a legislative politics class, meeting with Utah State University President Noelle Cockett to discuss involvement throughout rural Utah and shaking hundreds of hands during a meet-and-greet in the Taggart Student Center.

Utah State gymnastics posts third-highest score in school history

USU gymnastics scored the third-highest team score in program history, totaling 196.500 in a win over SUU.

It was the second time in three meets Utah State was able to set a season high score. The last time coming against BYU at home with USU finishing with a 196.100.

Utah sees dramatic increase in teen suicide over four year period

According to a 2017 study released by the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there has been a 136 percent increase in Utah suicides over the last four years.

The CDC found in a study from 2011-2015 the suicide rate among Utah youth aged 10-17 was on average, two times higher than then crude suicide rate among U.S. youth, among other things.

‘Intimidation, shame and leverage:’ Inside USU’s piano department

An independent investigation into allegations of harassment by faculty members in the Caine College of the Arts is nearing its completion.

The investigation has been ongoing for six weeks and could be finished by Friday, said Tim Vitale, university spokesperson.

Utah State University hired Alan Sullivan, a Salt Lake City-based attorney, to investigate claims made by two former students on Facebook in February.

Questions remain about track coach firing

Recently obtained records suggest one of Utah State’s most successful athletic coaches, Gregg Gensel, was terminated last fall possibly due to what what USU termed as “job competence.”

Five months after his official departure, Utah State remains quietly reluctant to release information about the former coach. The university did not send out a formal public announcement until a press release more than a month after his departure. In that release — sent out Dec. 22 — the university only said that Gensel was “no longer employed by the university.”

USU’s Quidditch team heads to nationals

The USU Quidditch team is headed to the U.S. Quidditch Cup in Round Rock, TX for the third year in a row.

Eight regions compete in the U.S. Quidditch Cup, and only five teams can place in regionals to make it to the tournament. 12 teams competed in the West region and Utah State University took fifth place.

‘Uncle Wiggly Wings’ speaks at USU

As a young farm boy from Garland, Utah, Gail Halvorsen fell in love with planes and flying. He would often watch the planes fly over the fields and hoped that one day, his time would come when he would get to fly his own plane.

Several years later in 1942, as an Aggie at Utah State University, the spirits were up and many young men were getting their calls to serve in the military during World War II. Meanwhile Halvorsen studied civil engineering, waiting for his time to join the war efforts in Germany.

USU’s Title IX director removed from position

Utah State University Title IX director Stacy Sturgeon will no longer serve in her position. The role will temporarily be filled by Scott Bodily, a Title IX specialist and former detective with the Logan City Police Department.

The announcement comes after the investigation into USU’s piano program released its findings earlier this year. On April 6, in response to the report, Cockett announced “leadership changes” within the Title IX office.

Miss Diversity is crowned this year’s Miss USU

Alexis Cooper was crowned Miss USU 2018 at this year’s pageant.

The theme for Miss USU is “There is More to Me.” Riley Michaelsen, the A-Week director, said this year they are trying to stress that USU is full of many different individuals.

As Miss Diversity, Cooper said, “it goes to show that us little guys, if we are loud enough we will be heard.”

Utah State men’s tennis wins second straight MW title

The Aggies defended their spot atop the Mountain West Conference, defeating Fresno State 4-1 to capture the team’s second consecutive MW tournament title.

“That was my biggest fear going into this, because this could be our last match. This could be the last run with these guys,” said USU head coach James Wilson. “I just want to keep it going because it’s just so much fun. They work so hard. They play for each other. They do it the right way and it’s just so much fun to be a part of.”
