Women in Service with Letitia Clark

Women running for political office face biased attitudes. They encounter the same challenges once again in office. These women want to make their communities a better place for everyone.

Women on the campaign trail get more media attention on their personal lives than their candidacy. Regrettably, some women are doubted of their abilities to run. However, the following case study tells of a woman who faced those challenged and overcame them.

One of the few women who ran for office in the city of Tustin, Letitia Clark found inspiration in her own family’s legacy. Her grandmother’s mother was the first postmaster in New Orleans. Upon completing an internship with a woman running for office in New Orleans, Clark decided that she would also run for political office.

Campaign Struggles

Warned about the scrutiny of a political campaign, Clark’s family was concerned about her ability to run for office. She managed to persuade them and even though they were reluctant at first, in the end they were on board because of her confidence.

As her campaign started, Clark ran against three white, Republican men. The questions Clark received from the media were different than the questions her opponents were asked. Here are the examples of the questions she was asked:

Deflecting these questions, Clark told the media that serving in political office has been a long time goal. In fact, she has always wanted to serve at the local level. She wants to represent women in her community and strive for great achievements.

In Office

Once elected into office, Clark felt that her voice could be drowned out by the rest of the city council. Clark understands that she is only woman in the council and that her comments may not be welcomed at times. But, that does not stop her from voicing her concerns with her fellow council members and community.

Today, she has the second highest position in the city council. It is truly inspiring to see a women of color be at such a high position of power. She sets the example of what can be accomplished when you pour your heart into a campaign.

Plans for Change

Women represent half of the population and should be represented more in political office. Clark was part of the Emerge program where woman study to become politicians. She wishes to create a network of woman that are political involved in the city of Tustin. Having the support of a fellow woman can be extremely helpful while in office.

While Letitia Clark is in office, she wishes to see some changes regarding her city. She would love to create a woman and girl’s commission for Tustin. Even though that goal can not be accomplished soon, she still hopes to use her platform to address woman’s issues and spotlight the woman that are making changes in the community.

Closing Remarks

Women, like Letitia Clark, make a statement in their communities. They do what many women think they should not be doing. These women go above and beyond to make sure their voices are heard and to make sure that they are represented in a democracy where men are the majority.
