Salisbury University Football 2021 Season Preview

The Spring

Salisbury finished the Spring 2021 season 2-0 with wins over Wesley and Christopher Newport to win the NJAC South Division Championship, the team's second-straight NJAC Championship.

The Sea Gulls began the spring season with a tough 32-30 win over the Wolverines in the final Route 13 Rivalry game. Marcus Wilson led the Salisbury offense with 101 yards on 17 carries and a pair of touchdowns. Jack Lanham went 9-of-16 through the air with 85 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Lanham added a touchdown on the ground. Josh Adewumi tallied seven tackles and an interception. Sean Carroll, Casey Counts and A.J. Butler all recorded five tackles. Carroll added a tackle for loss and a pass breakup.

Salisbury overpowered CNU, 30-5, in the final game of the spring. SU tallied 377 yards of total offense, including 316 on the ground. Joey Bildstein and Shamar Gray led the ground attack for SU. Bildstein toted the rock 13 times for 81 yards while Gray galloped for 78 yards on 10 carries. Both found the endzone on the ground. Salisbury blanked CNU in the second half and held the Captains to 183 yards of total offense.

After the season, Lanham was tabbed as the NJAC South Division Offensive Player of the Year. Eleven Sea Gulls were tabbed for the All-NJAC divisional team.

a look back at 2019

Salisbury finished the 2019 season with an 11-1 overall record, going 7-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference to win the NJAC Championship and secure the program's 11th NCAA Tournament appearance. Salisbury defeated Maritime and Union on the way to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Salisbury collected 13 All-NJAC selections in 2019, including the NJAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year Jack Lanham and NJAC Coach of the Year Sherman Wood. After the season, Salisbury had three D3football.com All-Region players (Jack Lanham, Tyler Norwood and Sean Carroll). Tyler Norwood earned All-American honors from AP and D3football.com while Sean Carroll was tabbed an honorable mention D3football.com All-American.

Returning All-NJAC Selections

Jack Lanham

Senior | Quarterback

Jack Lanham has been one of the most dynamic players in the nation since taking over as the full-time starter during the early parts of the 2019 season. Lanham is a two-time NJAC Offensive Player of the Year after earning co-offensive honors in 2019 and was the South Division Offensive Player of the Year in the spring of 2021. Lanham was also a D3football.com All-East Region selection in 2019. Lanham has scored 30 touchdowns in his career, split evenly between passing and rushing scores. He has totaled 1,687 passing yards and 873 rushing yards in 20 career games in the maroon and gold.

Chad Gleason

Senior | Slot

Chad Gleason has played a major role in the passing and running game as well as special teams in three seasons on the Shore. A two-time All-NJAC First Team honoree, Gleason has tallied 1,564 all-purpose yards with a career-high 1,118 yards during the playoff run in 2019. In his career, Gleason has carried the ball 77 times with 697 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He has also caught 11 passes for 258 yards and a pair of scores out of the slot position.

Joey Osborne

Senior | Offensive Line

Joey Osborne has proved to be a strong piece of the vaunted SU offensive front. Osborne earned D3football.com All-America honors after the Spring 2021 season and is a two-time All-NJAC selection. In the spring, Salisbury ranked first in the NJAC in scoring average (31.0), total offense per game (348.5), rushing yards per game (275.5) and total touchdowns (7). In 2019, Osborne helped SU rank second in rushing offense (325.0 ypg) and passing yards per completion (20.41 ypc), fifth in passing efficiency (186.76), seventh in scoring offense (47.5 ppg) and 24th in total offense (450.8 ypg).

Marcus wilson

Junior | Superback

In his first season as a Sea Gull, Wilson was named to the Spring 2021 All-NJAC team after leading the team with 143 rushing yards with a pair of touchdowns.

sean carroll

Senior | Defensive Back

A standout in the defensive backfield for the Sea Gulls, Carroll was a 2019 D3football.com All-America Honorable Mention pick and has earned three All-NJAC nods with first-team honors in 2019 and Spring 2021. Carroll is tied for eighth in career interceptions with 10 picks. He has racked up 60-plus tackles in each of the full seasons played as a starter to total 139 stops in four seasons with the Sea Gulls. Carroll has also forced three fumbles, recovered three fumbles with 12 pass breakups.

Carroll also helped Salisbury become one of the top defenses in the country. The Sea Gulls ranked ninth in the nation in rushing defense, only allowing 74.0 yards per game, and 31st in total defense with opponents only averaging 291.8 yards per contest.

Jamere furbush

Senior | Linebacker

A Spring 2021 All-NJAC South Division selection, Furbush has appeared in 25 games in four seasons with the Sea Gulls. In his career, Furbush has notched 49 tackles, which include 10 tackles for loss. He has sacked the quarterback 4.5 times along with recovering two fumbles. He has also factored into the passing game with four pass breakups in his tenure with the Sea Gulls.

Rob Jadick

Senior | Defensive Line

A Spring 2021 All-NJAC selection, Jadick has appeared in 21 games for the Sea Gulls in his career, including playing in all 12 games in 2019. During the 2019 season, Jadick notched 30 tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Casey counts

Sophomore | Linebacker

After making an impact as a special teams player in 2019, Counts was selected for the Spring 2021 All-NJAC team after tying for the team lead in tackles for loss (2) and tied for fourth in tackles (10). Six of his 10 tackles were solo stops.

Aaron Jahnke

Junior | Defensive Back

Jahnke became a starter in the condensed spring season and made an impact out on the cornerback position for SU. A Spring 2021 All-NJAC selection, Johnke tied for fourth on the team in tackles (10) and broke up a pass.

bert schrecongost

Senior | Kicker

A two-time All-NJAC Special Teams pick, Bert Schrecongost has proved to be a consistent leg at the kicker position throughout his time in the maroon and gold. In 2019, Schrecongost was named an All-NJAC Honorable Mention after hitting all five of his field goal attempts in 2019. He was 73-of-78 on extra-point attempts. He totaled 88 points to lead all kickers in the NJAC and rank second amongst all players. During the shortened spring season in 2021, he converted both of his field-goal attempts and was a perfect 6-for-6 in PATs.

Chris Clark

Sophomore | Wide Receiver / Returner

A speedy receiver and dangerous returner, Clark has totaled 241 all-purpose yards in his two seasons with the Sea Gulls. He notched 202 punt return yards in 2019. He was named to the Spring 2021 All-NJAC team.

key returners - offense

The offense returns playmakers in the backfield and out wide. The backfield will be paced by Shamar Gray (top) along with Joey Bildstein (second row right). Gray totaled nine touchdowns on 56 carries and 384 yards. Bildstein looks to build on a freshman season where he found the end zone twice in seven games. In the spring, Gray and Bildstein combined for 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Out wide, Lenard Prue (second row left), Zach Gadwill (bottom row left) and Hunter Cleaver (bottom right) gives SU athleticism and strong blocking ability from the receiver position. Cleaver and Prue each caught nine passes in 2019. Cleaver notched 228 yards and two touchdowns while Prue tallied three scores on 254 receiving yards. In Spring 2021, Cleaver led the team with 58 yards and a touchdown. Gadwill reeled in a pair of passes with 40 yards.

key returners - defense

Despite losses in the front seven due to graduation in 2019, Salisbury remains strong on defense gaining experience through the spring season. The defensive line will feature Sam Pavlick upfront. Pavlick led the team with five sacks for 28 yards lost in eight games in 2019. He also recorded six tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. In the spring 2021 season, Pavlick tallied six tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. Josh Adewumi, a veteran on the team, along with Ben Speiss, Jimmy Celentano, Nero Schrader, Ryan Muller all return to the linebacker group in 2021. Myles Christian and AJ Butler all look to make an impact in the secondary in 2021. Christian totaled 38 tackles during the 2019 season, which ranked sixth on the team. He also accounted for four tackles for loss and five pass breakups from the secondary. 
We are ready to take the next step in our development. Our program capitalized on the mometum from 2019 and the spring season to get to this season. Our team has strong senior leadership as well as young group that has developed greatly this past year. We are fired up to get the season going.
