Four habits to implement to be more sustainable by Ella Shi

  1. Reusing old jars and containers can save waste and double as reusable containers. Old pasta sauce, salsa, peanut butter jars can be great for storing things, and they can be used as drinking cups. Even plastic takeout containers can be reused, rather than being thrown away.

My favorite way to reuse glass jars is to use them for matcha lattes, or use them to store dry goods such as chia and flax seeds.

2. Investing in reusable grocery bags can save plastic. Although many stores opt for brown paper bags rather than the classic plastic bag, using your own reusable bags prevents excess waste regardless. Many grocery stores, such as Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Stop and Shop offer their own branded bags – making grocery shopping a little more chic.

3. Thrifting can be a fun, affordable way to be more sustainable. Buying goods second-hand reduces the amount of waste being thrown into landfills, and it reduces greenhouse gas factory emissions. You can find all types of items at the thrift store such as accessories, clothing, home decor, furniture, electronics and more.

You can find vintage, unique pieces of clothing for inexpensive, such as these amazing Harley Davidson jeans for $11.

4. Eating more plant-based can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water waste. According to Green Eatz, vegetarians have around half the carbon footprint of a meat-eater, and it’s even lower for vegans. While being fully vegan or vegetarian may be unrealistic for many, incorporating more plant-based meals and snacks can still make a positive environmental impact.

Occasionally swapping your beef burger for a veggie burger, or beans for ground meat on taco night can make an impact. Choosing oat milk over cow's milk can also be an easily adjusted switch.
