Visions of Safety Donna Acevedo In combating excessive police violence and injustices, local women in Southern California advocate a vision of safety and instill trust between the public and the police.

Donna Acevedo is a California resident living in Anaheim California. Donna was born in 1967 and has lived in Anaheim all her life. As a child she lived with her mother who was an RN at Anaheim’s hospital. Donna had many strong women around her including her mother and her grandmother.

In the summer of 2012 Joel Acevedo was shot and killed by local law enforcement. Joel’s mother Donna Acevedo in combating police brutality uses her son’s story as a window to advocate for better safety procedures for police’s interaction with the public. The tragic loss of Donna’s Son and her vision of safety within Anaheim has help Donna manifest a sense of hope among other victims that were affected by Police brutality.

Donna’s mission in advocating for change starts with how local elections in Anaheim are run as she is in support of true single-member district elections, “so we can have council members that are responsive to every neighborhood in this great town, not just to the big money”.

Donna’s role as an activist has sparked questioning on how the Anaheim elections are run and the type of people that were being elected who either cared for the community or wherever money was flowing. In combating police brutality in her city, Donna became active in her communities’ political sphere.
