Sophomore Neketa Dixon-Jenkins celebrates Christmas annually, usually with her close friends and extended family. Although festivities may be different this year, she still looks forward to those enjoyable moments.
“There is never a dull moment in my household during the holiday season,” Dixon-Jenkins said.
To prepare for the holiday season, Dixon-Jenkins and her family decorate their home, inside and out.
“My family likes to decorate, whereas I love to. It keeps us busy for a few days putting up trees and lights outside,” Dixon-Jenkins said. “It’s our pre-Christmas ritual.”
Dixon-Jenkins’ favorite sweet treat during the holidays is Jamaican fruit cake. This cake is made with numerous dried fruits, including apricot, prunes and raisins, as well as spices like nutmeg and cinnamon.
On Christmas Day, Dixon-Jenkins and her family have a few annual traditions to make the day special. One of those traditions is that in her home on Christmas, a member of her family prays before they eat dinner. Presents are also opened after dinner around their Christmas tree while desserts are served.
At the end of Christmas day, Dixon-Jenkins and her family come together to take a color coordinated family photo to remember the moment.
“We like to keep things positive and hopefully make memories that last,” Dixon-Jenkins said.
Dixon-Jenkins is eager to end this year off on an optimistic note, enjoying winter break and celebrating Christmas with her family at home.
