The Spooky Noises project began in 1993, with the publication of the original picture book, written by Simon James Collier, illustrated by Louise Comfort and designed by Lisa Coombes. The original book was published by Sticky Buns Limited and proved to be a great success, both in English and other languages.
In 2011/12 composer Richard Bates began re-working the piece with Collier, but in order to expand the story they combined the original premise with the addition of the 'Norman' series of books, a spin-off based on one of the original characters. The first 'Norman' book was published in association with the Barnados charity.
The first work-shop of the re-developed Spooky Noises was in 2012 at St. John's in East London.
In July 2018 Collier and Bates began rehearsals for the audio production of the piece, and in August they took a team of 15, including Musical Director Alex Bellamy and Engineer Ben Robbins, into the studio and over a period of two weeks they created the final production.
