30 Years of Urban Design
Our Urban Design program recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary. Urban Design is only offered here in Tulsa and is a creative discipline integrating aspects of architecture, city planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture, and real estate development.
Each year, Urban Design students work on a community collaboration project on an area in need of development and/or beautification. Past projects have included development on the west side of the Arkansas River, revitalization of 11th Street, and bringing world-renowned art to downtown Tulsa. This year, our students are working on the B.S. Roberts Park in the Greenwood District in north Tulsa. The group is helping with Little Black Wall Street, an incubator for small business start-ups, as well as starting a farmers market and adding public art.
OU-Tulsa’s Urban Design Studio, a program through the College of Architecture, is the only one of its kind in Oklahoma. The graduate degree program is now a Master of Urban Design (MUD). The college is now also offering a Certificate of Design Entrepreneurship & Real Estate. These two programs are run by Shawn Schaefer, the Director of the Urban Design Studio at OU-Tulsa.
Dementia Friendly Campus
Mayor GT Bynum has launched an initiative for Tulsa to become a dementia friendly community, where people with dementia are enabled to live as independently as possible and remain a part of a community that greets them with understanding and support. Tulsa leaders have been challenged to promote a culture of awareness and inclusion, and to help break down the barriers that limit the lives of people with dementia and their caregivers.
OU-Tulsa is joining the initiative! We are the FIRST university in the country to pursue this designation. We can be a place that offers better access to community life, increased awareness that promotes kindness and safety, excellent healthcare, and bridges to community resources. There are 24,000+ lives impacted in Tulsa each day, so what better place than OU-Tulsa to model a culture of meaningful engagement and inclusion?

Sustainability: New Recycling Program!
After nearly a decade of wanting to implement a true recycling program for OU-Tulsa, thanks to Shelly Fowler and the OU-Tulsa Green Team, the dream is now a reality!
We all have a responsibility to be good stewards of the earth’s resources. We hope to increase student, faculty, and staff awareness of and progress toward sustainability. This new program will take all of us working together, so thank you in advance for your help! Click here to learn more about our new recycling program.
Questions? Look for “Ask me about recycling on campus” signs. These are members of the OU-Tulsa Green Team and can answer your recycling questions. If you have questions or would like to join the Green Team, please contact sfowler@ou.edu.
