EXPRESSIVE TYPOGRAPHY Madison Phillips
PROJECT ABSTRACT
I will be exploring the process of expressive type and the physical creation and digital creation of letterforms inspired by articles written in The New York Times. I will choose articles from different sections of The New York Times ( world, politics, Business, Tech, Science, Health, Sports, Arts, Food, Style etc.) I will explore the creative and process of creating a series of expressive type posters challenging my creative process while strengthening my typography skills. The end products will be a series of 10-20 posters, a process book, and animations. I want to challenge what a poster is and what a poster can be!
INSPIRATION
I was inspired by a class that I took sophomore year Type in the fab lab, we explored building 3D typography systems using tools such as 3D printer, laser cutter and embroidary machine.

BUILDING PROCESS
INSPIRATION
The images above are examples of " paper engineering" is the idea of creating imagery and forms in a 3D space using paper. Many other artists use this idea to make things move such as many Kelli Anderson books where functional things happen. Like the idea of paper engineering, it realties and reminds me of the engineering of our bodies, physically and the DNA makeup inside. The way that we are also so complex, I thought it would be interesting to physically build these forms to include in my poster.
Article 4: How to Reach the Unvaccinated
This article sparked an interest in the ways that it connected with me, about getting vaccinated. As of recently I got the opportunity to receive the Vaccine and I had many of these fears and questions like many others. I also gathered additional research about the myths of the Covid vaccine through the CDC website on Myths and Facts About COVID-19 Vaccines.
Vision board
For this poster I would like to illustrate the typography, using the creation symbol design of the actually vaccine itself. I want to create the vaccines to be distorted and take on the from of the letters. The distortion reflect to the idea of media distorting the myths of the vaccine. I want to make it fun and playful, while advocating for having equal opportunity to all communities to get vaccinated.
Illustration Inspiration
The illustrations above are works from Steffen Kraft, who is an illustrator and designer. A lot his work are really creative and take a new approach to environmental and current issues. My favorite thing about his work is his use of color and how creative and invent he gets, the Covid illustrations are really smart and what statements he says with eh pieces really comes across to the audience. Steffen Kraft aka ICONEO
Process
I spent about 10-15mins sketching and creating different ways that I can illustrate a vaccine needle. Maybe the needle is skewed to represent the ways that media is misrepresenting the myths about the vaccine, creating fear and panic. I want to focus on creating a sketchy style for the illustration.

ARTICLE 6: As Locusts Swarmed East Africa. This Tech Helped Squash Them
Inspiration
I came across this image on Pinterest. I was comparing the images that the article provided, being the Locusts taking up the space. The article described it to be heavy and a dark cloud. I associated this things with design such as line weight, positive and negative space, and piratic movements. The image above that sparked the inspiration does this exactly, which leads to my next collection of images.
Artist inspiration
These set of drawings were created by Daniel Libeskind ( head of the Architecture department at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan). The drawings explore the relationship between music and architecture in an architectonic and graphic point of view and have been influential in his later designs. Although these works aren't directly connected to the topic of the article , I liked the relation to the energy of the mark making that reminded me of the energy of the Locust insects and how they were to be described as heavy when in a swarm and how it looked to be a dark cloud.
