California Mini-Corps Program
The California Mini-Corps program was initiated over 50 years ago. There are over 20 Mini-Corps Programs across the state at different colleges and Universities. The California Mini-Corps program recruits full-time, bilingual, Porterville College students that are pursuing a teaching career. Once a student is admitted into the program, Mini-Corps participants work as teacher assistants in local public K-12 schools providing direct instructional services to migrant learners. Mini-Corps participants work under the direct supervision of certified teachers and are supervised by a Mini-Corps College Coordinator. Participants are paid an hourly wage and also receive monthly training where they learn strategies to work with their students and can later implement as a classroom teacher. The Mini-Corps Program provides a unique opportunity for future teachers to network in local schools.

David Herrera
Single Subject Math Teacher - Porterville High School
What do you want to be when you grow up? This was a question that I answered in second grade. I wrote, I want to be a math teacher. This dream did not change until my journey came to Porterville College. For a brief moment and a few great classes in business I thought maybe I would pursue a life in business. However, the calling of becoming a teacher was too strong to ignore. Growing in knowledge from an exceptional math department at Porterville College solidified my decision to become a math teacher. My next step would be Fresno Pacific University which continued to foster my love for Math and education. Currently I am the head of the math department and math coach at Porterville High. I have had the pleasure of working there for the last 21 years. During this time I can say that I have learned that teaching is a very rewarding and difficult job. My advice to you is if you have a love to help others and are a hard working person perceiver through school and before you know it you will have a rewarding career and a life to be admired.
Clarisa Flores
Multiple Subject Kindergarten Teacher - William R. Buckley Elementary School
My name is Clarisa Flores and I am a proud former graduate of Porterville College. I graduated from Porterville College the winter of 2017 with an AA in Liberal Arts and an AA in Social Sciences. While attending Porterville College for 5 semesters, I was involved in the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and was able to maintain a GPA that allowed me to graduate and transfer to Chico State’s Liberal Studies program and then transferred to Fresno State’s Liberal Studies program in the fall of 2018. While attending Fresno State as an undergraduate, I was involved in the Kremen School of Education Council to represent the transfer students of my college. I graduated from Fresno State in the spring of 2020 with a bachelor degree in Liberal Studies in hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher as I had dreamed of since I was in elementary school. I then applied and was accepted to the CalStateTEACH teacher credential program. This August, during the same time, Burton School District hired me as a teacher of record for William R. Buckley Elementary School as a Kindergarten teacher under an emergency credential from the county. This provided me with the opportunity to not only have a full-time job, but also to initiate my student teaching with CalStateTEACH. If I could give any advice to PC students pursuing a career in education, I would say, maintain the highest GPA possible, be involved, volunteer your time wisely, and if possible, seek employment in the educational field.
