Heritage, Passion and Opportunity in Rio Grande City
In the middle of the hustle and bustle of this small Texas town, stands a neon lighted sign with the iconic palm trees of the Rio Grande Valley and the tagline “We Meet by Accident”, but Lee Rivera’s success has been anything but an accident. Born and raised in Rio Grande City, Mr. Rivera is a man with a rich heritage. He inherited from his father, a strong work ethic. From his mother, he received a down-to-earth, no nonsense attitude. And from his older brother, he acquired a passion for cars that would steer his career in the diverse automotive industry. For 18 years, R & R Collision Center and the establishment of its sister companies created a legacy of entrepreneurship and innovation and stands as a reminder that there is endless opportunity in Rio Grande City.
How did you build a successful customer base?
After graduation, I lived in Michigan for several years and returned to Rio Grande City. In 2000, I started out of my parent’s garage on the west side of Rio Grande City and two months later, my brother, Ruben, joined me. I found providing quality craftsmanship and customer service goes a long way in building a customer base. As long as you do quality work, everything will come after that.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Looking back to where we started and seeing where we are today has been the most rewarding. As we grew, we faced and overcame challenges and knowing that our customers see our dedication and passion reflect in our work is even more satisfying.
What kind of culture exists in your organization?
We have daily morning staff meetings and we include prayer as part of our agenda. Many on our staff have been with me for over 10 years and we spend most of our time working together, so I believe it is important we consider ourselves as family.
Did you make assumptions when you first started out that proved to be wrong? What sort of insights did you gain?
It’s best to never make assumptions. I’ve stumbled and made mistakes along the way, but as long I worked towards my goal, I believed everything would work out. You take yourself out of the ballgame by doubting yourself and giving up before trying. It is up to you to make the effort in order to succeed in your goals.
What sort of resources (not just financial) did you have when you started the venture?
We first reached out to the Small Business Administration for guidance. They, in turn referred us to an organization called LiftFund. They are a nonprofit that provides small business lending and educational services at no cost to borrowers. Many are not aware there are plenty of free resources available. Organizations like the Small Business Development Center and even our public library provide free information there for the taking, if you are hungry enough to pursue your dreams.
What advice do you have for someone wanting to become a business owner?
If you want to be successful, you have to read. Reading is important. It is a way to keep your mind expanding and striving towards new horizons. Writing is also the best thing you can do. Write down your dreams and goals on a regular basis and you will be more likely to accomplish them.
