Superintendent's Summary DR. JACK PARKER ~ 8.31.2021

The first 25 days of school are under our belt and we are moving forward with renewed hope and vigor. Our COVID numbers are dropping and more students are able to maintain in-person learning. We have record-breaking enrollment and an even more positive trend than we had for the first 25 days of the 2019-2020 (pre-COVID) school year. We are bursting at the seams!

We have always said that our plans for adding learning space would proceed after “we saw the whites of their eyes” as timing is essential to the stewardship of our resources. Since part of our Future Growth Plan is to add space to Fortville Elementary (the future MV Intermediate School for 5th & 6th grade students), we are working to start that project very soon as Fortville Elementary will need additional classrooms before they move into their new building in a few years. If labor and materials allow, we will likely be breaking ground on Fortville Elementary’s addition in early 2022.

Many thanks to the wonderful Mt. Vernon community for the support provided to our students and staff. We are working hard to provide the best learning opportunities for our students and we are excited to help them reach their full potential as Marauders. #WeRMV

WE'RE HIRING!

MVCSC has a critical need to fill many positions. All positions are integral to our mission of supporting student learning. We particularly need new team members for food service, bus drivers, instructional assistants, and custodians. Optional supplemental insurance is available for all positions!

Food Service - Due to staffing shortages in the food service department, some schools must operate breakfast/lunch differently. Come work part-time with a great team while your child/grandchild is in school!

Custodians - Custodians work year-round with additional benefit options. These staff members keep our top-notch facilities safe, clean and provide a positive learning environment.

Bus Drivers - We have a critical shortage of drivers. Join the driving team and start our students’ day off with a smile! Also, MVCSC will provide the necessary training for candidates to receive their CDL license! Bus drivers have split schedules and a starting pay of over $20/hour.

Instructional Assistants - Instructional assistants are a key part of classroom management. Enjoy time working directly with students and make a difference in their lives!

MV's Sept. 10th Event Commemorating 9/11

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation invites all local first responders, veterans, and community members to the event on September 10th that will commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11!

Join us at the Mt. Vernon High School Hancock Health stadium at 9:11 AM on Friday, September 10th. The commemoration will showcase a military color guard, the Mt. Vernon High School band and choir, scheduled moments of silence, and a student display of unity. See details HERE for parking; please arrive after 8:30 a.m. to avoid school traffic and buses.

Please invite any first responders, veterans, and community members that you know!

Cost-Cutting Corner

  • The Stewardship Project costs (mainly updating roofs, HVAC systems, & middle school updates) continue to come in under the original budget projections, which allowed an additional $500,000 to be added to technology infrastructure upgrades to the middle school, all while not adding to the total project costs.
  • The anticipated increase in property values for the budget year 2022 will allow the district to pay back the 2022 bus financing and a $3 million dollar G.O. Bond in one year, (for continued Stewardship improvements), thus saving on an additional year of financing and interest costs all without an increase to the debt service tax rate.
  • The cost for the installation of ionization air purifiers for all classrooms throughout the district has come in under budget with a savings of $60,000.
