Netflix Binge Series Review
Netflix has been a pleasant way to pass time for me, and I don’t doubt you might feel the same way. When you pop Netflix on, you know you're settling in to relax and go on a little adventure. Adventures that could have you choking from laughing, excited from the suspense, and intrigued by the mystery. Some adventures could also leave you sad and blue for a bit. However, the best ones are the ones that leave you thinking later. The ones leaving you questioning the meaning and message, ones that change our way of thinking. Here are two Netflix series that ensure a meaningful binge.
Mr.Robot
Mr.Robot is a psychological thriller and drama series made by Sam Esmail. The show’s about a vigilante hacker, Elliot Alderson. Mr.Robot is set in New York in 2015. The show follows Elliot, an incredibly intelligent but psychologically ill. He suffers from Dissociative Disorder, a disorder that leaves Elliot Alderson in a fight for control with himself. This undoubtedly leaves Elliot in an interesting limbo state of mind. Too delusional to be human, too smart to not survive. Elliot comes from a dark upbringing, the result of his parents. He embarks on a noble yet dangerous quest to take down the top one percent, of the top one percent. The ones playing god without permission. The series shows a tremendous amount of mysterious twists and turns. Moments of surprises and awe. The show illustrates the struggles of a man whose best weapon is his synergy between his tremendous rage and intelligence. His biggest weakness, however, is himself.
I find this show amazing because of the complex situations the characters are put into, we get to see the beautiful and horrifying development of the characters. The show also breaks the fourth wall in a very effective way. The show itself feels surreal at times. Occasionally he’d acknowledge and talk to us because we’re his friends. At least, that’s what he thinks we are. The show will hook you and not let go for quite a while, because of its duration of five seasons. I find this show amazing and beautiful, but I’ve got to admit that it has left me pondering. If the very existence of the socioeconomic food chain exists, it goes without saying that there’d be an apex predator atop the chain. In our existence’s case, a team of apex predators. It was amazing to see a panther, hiding in the dark, take them all down. He did so with his unstoppable power. A power that is so powerful, it seems mere impossible to obtain. A power that only someone so powerful would obtain, right? In reality, we all possess this power. Technology. What does it mean when all of us possess this “superpower”? Is everyone a hero? Is there no hero?
Rick and Morty
Rick and Morty is a dark comedy and science fiction series made by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. The show follows the adventures of Rick and Morty, a mad scientist, and his grandson Morty. The show’s characters are a mock of Doc and Marty from the movie franchise “Back to The Future”. Rick and Morty’s adventures are quite interesting and unpredictable as there is no certain plot to it, as well as the infinity of randomness. Rick has made a tool to access all dimensions. Similar to Doc and Marty traveling through time, Rick and Morty travel through dimensions. In the series reality, the number of universes is infinite. Creating universes where the characters can adventure to. Each adventure means an infinite amount of possibilities. The series dives into the deep exploration of science throughout these universes.
Being the smartest man in all the universes can have grand benefits and terrible consequences. Rick discovers that all is infinite, all built from a singular finite. Each universe is forged from a singular source of energy. A source of energy so powerful at, such a small scale, causing each universe to have different laws of physics. Variations introduce when the infinite is translated into the finite. He realises that nothing is special, all part of one and all. He is but a mere infinite in the infinite. I often think if this show was just nonsense or if it’s up to something. It is a depiction of the multiverse theory, a very complicated and controversial theory. The movie explains in a very detailed manner, with some humor mixed in. The show does a good job of mixing an entertaining show and an exploration into the multiverse. However, I think the best thing about the show is its bittersweet tone. The crazy fun adventures and the life questioning breaks between them.
