Halloween Costumes Expected to See in 2021 By Catherine Khitiri, Chief Senior Visual and Social Media

Trends come and go, but there is one night a year where people put these evolving trends on display. Whether it's from the latest movies, TV shows or fads, no Halloween is the same. These trendy costumes are not just popular among West Essex students, but among pop culture in general. In no particular order, here are my predictions for the latest Halloween costumes expected to be found exclusively in 2021.

#1: Harley Quinn from "The Suicide Squad" (2021)

Remember the Joker and Harley Quinn phenomena of 2016? It seemed that everywhere I looked there was a sea of red and blue tipped pigtails, "Daddy's Lil Monster" shirts and baseball bats. In my opinion, the revamped, independent Harley Quinn is much more tasteful than the 2016 version, especially with her ripped-up, blood-red ball gown, combat boots and, of course, the iconic red and blue tipped pigtails. I can see a lot of people sporting her new look on Halloween. An iconic look for an iconic character. (Photo obtained from IMDb).

#2: Wanda From "WandaVision"

Marvel's decision to make mini TV shows for the underrated characters was an amazing one. "WandaVision" was legendary when it first came out in January. It was Marvel's first TV show and it statistically became Disney+'s most popular series before getting surpassed by "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" in March. Wanda's outfits are perfect Halloween material. Her Halloween costume showcased in episode six is her superhero outfit from the original comics. If that isn't suitable, there is always her decade outfits, from vintage 50s to groovy 70s to present day. The options are unlimited.

#3: Michael Myers

The new "Halloween Kills" movie came out earlier this month, making the classic slasher (and comically immortal) villain Michael Myers the perfect Halloween costume for 2021. Everyone knows Michael Myers and his iconic piano theme. He's been a traditional Halloween costume for decades. If you're in a rush, his costume is fairly easy to put together, just a white full-head mask, a jumpsuit and a kitchen knife (preferably not a real one). Ironically, this is probably the safest and easiest costume from the list. (Photo obtained from IMBd).

#4: "Squid Game" guards and players

"Squid Game" is Netflix's first Korean drama to reach the top 10 most watched TV show charts globally. Netflix certainly did not expect the hype, but this series took the world by storm. I can't even go to the mall without seeing "Squid Game" merchandise being displayed in every other store. With the show's growing popularity, it is bound to inspire some Halloween costumes. Most people would choose between the players in their green track suits or the guards in their pink/red jumpsuits and black face masks with shapes. As with all trends, "Squid Game" will eventually loose popularity, meaning Halloween 2021 will probably be the first and last Halloween to showcase costumes from the show (unless, of course, a second season comes out).

#5: Y2K Paris Hilton/Barbie

Paris Hilton was the Kim Kardashian of the 90s and early 2000s. She sported all the revolutionary fashion fads, such as Juicy Couture jumpsuits, low rise jeans, bedazzled flip phones and lots and lots of pink. She was the epitome of a "Barbie Girl." All fashion trends are destined to make comeback eventually, and now the late 90's and early 2000's are making its way with the return of tiny tank tops, tiny sweaters, pleated skirts and bright colors. Instead of going as another 70's hippie for your decade costume, try playing up the early 2000's fashion trends to become the ultimate Barbie doll.

#6: "SOUR" cheerleader

Olivia Rodrigo is arguably one of the biggest young music artists of Gen Z. Her relatable teenage angst songs are perfect for young listeners. I can imagine super-fans incorporating her incredible and theatrical performances into a Halloween costume. The most involved would be a cheerleader from the "good 4 u" music video, complete with a blue and white cheer uniform and long black gloves. If you're looking for a very cheap and last-minute costume, just decorate your face in stickers just like the album cover. For those wanting a challenge, the best would be Rodrigo's SOUR Prom dress complete with running makeup and dead flowers.

#7: Cruella de Vil

Disney is still in its "live action" phase. Instead of making new movies, Disney is incorporating classic cartoons into live action films. Their latest release back in May was the origin story of the villain from "101 Dalmatians," Cruella de Vil. For those wanting an edgy Halloween costume, look no further than the fashion designer, Estella. Any of her outfits are enough to steal the spotlight at a Halloween party. Slap on a black and white split-dyed wig and suddenly you are the talk of the town.

#8: "The Purge"

I know, "The Purge" is not anything new. People have been wearing anonymous masks and wielding machetes on Halloween for years since the first "Purge" movie came out in 2013. The reason I added this on the list is because it's the perfect way for West Essex seniors to reuse their Color Day dance masks. The $4 Party City masks have probably been collecting dust since the pep rally. Seniors, if you want to save money, just reuse your masks. It's that simple.

#9: "Among Us"

The game is dead and the joke is overused; that's what many people say anyway. I would not be surprised to see an inflatable imposter on Halloween night. There is bound to be at least a couple of people keeping the joke alive. However, this costume will probably remain exclusive to 2020 and 2021. I doubt "Among Us" will still be a running joke in 2022.

#10: "Scooby-Doo" Gang

Unlike the other costume ideas on this list, the "Scooby-Doo" gang is not exclusive to 2021. This is the ultimate go-to for any group looking for a costume. It has been done by multiple people every year. There's no shame in going as the "Scooby-Doo" gang for Halloween, however. It is just definitely to be expected this upcoming Halloween.
