Serial Position Effect

This term was coined by Herman Ebbinghaus

Definition: Items at the beginning and end of a sequence are more accurately remembered

ELECTRONIC ARTS

For one of their newer video games you see the call to action (to buy the game) immediately

Less important information is in the middle (description of the game, pictures, ect)

The sign up for their email list is last (another call to action)

BASED ON THE TRAITS LISTED BELOW, WHICH PERSON WOULD YOU RATHER BE FRIENDS WITH?

PERSON A:

ENVIOUS, STUBBORN, CRITICAL, IMPUSLIVE, SMART, FRIENDLY

PERSON B:

FRIENDLY, SMART, IMPULSIVE, CRITICAL, STUBBORN, ENVIOUS

Solomon Asch Traits Study/The Primacy Effect

Despite the fact that the traits listed are the same, people found PERSON B to be more appealing because the positive traits were listed first

RECENCY EFFECT

LEAVE ON A GOOD NOTE!

EXAMPLES:

Write a call of action at the end, Saying "have a great day" to customers leaving a store.

Another example: You might look back at your favorite show less fondly if its last season (or series finale) was not as good as the older seasons

If you have a bad first user experience, but all of your next experiences are good vs. if you have good experiences first, but then have a bad one
