Working in northern BC Career opportunities, the economy and campus communities.

CMTN campus communities

Coast Mountain College (CMTN) is an accredited post-secondary institution that serves the rich and diverse communities and learners of BC’s beautiful northwest region. It has five regional campuses serving 34 communities across northwest British Columbia (BC).

Terrace is the service, education and medical hub of the northwest and the largest city in the northwest with a population of over 12,000 people. Terrace has big box stores, family owned businesses, industrial development and the main Coast Mountain College campus.

Prince Rupert is a 1.5 hours drive west of Terrace on the Pacific coast of BC and has a population of roughly 11,700 people. With a huge port that acts as a gateway to foreign markets for trade it is where Canada receives a lot of its imported goods.

Smithers is a small town of roughly 6 000 people and has a rich and diverse locally-owned retail sector. It is a 2.5 hour drive Northeast of Terrace and offers wonderful outdoor recreational pursuits during all year long.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the North Coast and Nechako economic region of BC had the lowest unemployment rates the province had seen in 10 years.

Despite COVID-19 safety restrictions in BC, the province resumes some normalcy in regards to the economy. British Columbians who work in an office are continuing to work from home while retail and service sector workers are going back to their workplaces.

It is projected that in the upcoming two years, the Northern BC economy will see massive growth and need many skilled professionals.

Large industrial projects like the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Canada export terminal in Kitimat (a 45-minute drive from Terrace) is also home to one of Rio Tinto Alcan's largest aluminum smelter in North America. Rio Tinto Alcan is an international aluminum mining, smelting and manufacturing company, employing 46,000 people around the world.*

Future work opportunities at the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) are said to increase due to the ongoing Prince Rupert Fuels Marine project and the Vopak Pacific Canada project in 2022. PRPA will need many professionals in labor, administration and environmental sustainability departments.*
