Everyday moms are tasked with the responsibility of taking care of their children, juggling busy schedules, and being there for their family. Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and now more than ever it is important to recognize and show appreciation for all the things moms do.
Not all superheroes wear capes, but my mom is my hero for many reasons. She is there for me when I need her, and she has helped me grow into the person I am. Without her unconditional love and endless support I do not know where I would be today. I value her strength, and ability to always know what to say to make me feel better. One day I hope I can be as good of a role model as she is.
I value my mom’s funny and outgoing personality. I also value my mom’s love and care for me. Lastly, I appreciate everything she has done for me. [My mom] has always been there for me, and is my role model. She teaches me basic life skills and has helped me become who I am today. -Nicole Lane, senior
I would definitely say my mom is a hero. She has stayed strong for my sister and I throughout all of our struggles. I hope to be there for my children in the ways she has been there for me. She’s been a role model throughout my life whether it’s how she treats others, her work ethic, or her goofy personality. I know she is not only a hero in my eyes but her coworkers, her friends, and my family, because of the impact she makes on them. -Julia Borek, junior
Celebrating the holiday
For the longest time, I can remember that my family has always done something special to celebrate my mom. My dad is usually in charge of the plan, and he always comes up with a great plan to surprise my mom.
Sure, there is always the traditional breakfast in bed, cards, and a gift. However, on some occasions my family likes to go overboard.
One year, my dad came up with a really unique way to celebrate my mom on Mother’s Day. The night before, he bought tiny nerf guns, and my sister and I wrote a bunch of phrases on the foam bullets. For example, we wrote “Happy Mother’s Day,” “we love you mom,” “thank you for everything you do.”
The next morning we brought my mom breakfast, and when we walked in the room we shot the nerf gun bullets around the room so she could read the little notes we wrote her.
Julia Borek, junior, says and her sister celebrate their mom by doing an activity that she loves. They start out the day by making their mom a homemade breakfast, and she opens gifts. Then they stop at Home Depot to pick up some flowers.
"We spend the day helping her garden and make our front yard colorful after a dull winter," Borek said. "At the end of the day she usually makes a meal and we watch a show we all enjoy."
At the Lane household, the family typically celebrates by going out for brunch, according to Nicole Lane, senior. Lane and her sisters give their mom gifts and "treat her like the absolute queen that she is," Lane said.
Throughout the year your mom does a lot for you that you don’t acknowledge because “it’s her job”, this is the one day a year to let her know you appreciate everything she does for you. This is someone who will love you unconditionally, push you to be your best, and has played a big role in who you’ve become. Whether you make her a card or take her out to eat it will make her feel special, and make sure she knows her actions don’t go unnoticed. -Borek
I think it’s important for people to celebrate mother’s day, because mothers do a lot for their children. They deserve a day of recognition for how hard they work! -Joey Meister, freshman
