Meet Robert White
2016 DC At-Large Council Candidate
Robert is the type of person who doesn't shy away from hard work or long odds. Robert is a fifth-generation Washingtonian who knows how to face and persevere over adversity. Robert experienced a personal transformation at the age of 8, Robert's mother Tamara died of breast cancer. A month later, he nearly lost his life in a car accident on New Hampshire Avenue. After a tumultuous childhood, he became an excellent student in his youth and showed tremendous potential in his professional life.
Wanting to use his education to give back to his beloved home city, Robert served on Capitol Hill as Legislative Counsel to Eleanor Holmes Norton. Additionally, Robert was selected by Attorney General Karl A. Racine to head up as the first District Director of Community Outreach for the Office of the Attorney General.
After a strong showing in the 2014 race for the District's At-Large Council Seat, Robert successfully campaigned and won over his opponent Vincent Orange in the 2016 Primary. As of September 16, the DC Democratic Party approved him as the interim At-Large Councilmember until the end of the current term. In the meantime, he will serve on the Council and continue his campaign to the 2016 General Election on Tuesday, November 8.
His Vision and Commitment
Robert holds a vision for the District where businesses flourish, the government is accountable and people can find affordable places to live. He is an advocate, community organizer and loving husband.
Robert’s wife Christy, an attorney with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, encouraged Robert to follow his passion by addressing the growing needs of DC residents.
Robert’s life and upbringing instilled in him a sharp sense of responsibility, community, and social justice that led him to a life of public service. As a candidate, Robert works tirelessly to convey his message, which is that everyone in the District, especially middle- and lower-class families, should benefit from the city's growth.
His Platform
Good schools and education are integral to the future of DC's vibrant communities. He will champion their needs by working with parents, teachers and administrators to strengthen community schools.
Affordable housing is the cornerstone issue of Robert's campaign and in the District itself. He will fight to protect the current stock of affordable housing, and will create incentives for affordable housing development.
Safer communities are possible by improving the relationship between residents and law enforcement officials. Adding more police in DC and make them known to the people on each block that they patrol.
Jobs and livable wages are necessary for a thriving economy. Robert believes that the job training programs in the District are in shambles, and vows that he will clean up the mess. This will lead to better and more opportunities.
Transparency and integrity in government are critical to setting a level-playing field and ensuring that all citizens receive the services and the care that they need.
These are just a few of the issues Robert aims to address by becoming DC's At-Large Councilmember.
His Promise
As a Councilmember, he will fight for a safer city, champion affordable housing, support teachers and students in our schools, and root out the last vestiges of corruption in DC Government.
If elected, Robert will also take on the needs of the District by championing:
- Campaign Finance Reform
- Universal Child-Care
- Paid Leave
- Environment Issues
- Working Families
- Incentives To Drive Business
Robert talks the talk and walks the walk by getting involved in the community. He has laid a personal stake in the growth of the District, and he will work tirelessly to see its children grow, businesses succeed and residents flourish.
