45th Meeting of the AfricaRice Board of Trustees, M’bé Research Station, Côte d’Ivoire, 8-11 Apr 2019
Over five days, more than 70 participants, consisting mainly of AfricaRice scientists, as well as key technical partners and value chain actors from Côte d’Ivoire met at the Science Week 2019 to discuss ongoing work, progress, modes of partnership and research support. The Science Week was held, 11-15 February 2019, at AfricaRice’s main research station in M’bé, near Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire.

High-Level Ministerial (HLM) Conference on Rice Development in Sub-Saharan Africa and Senegal Rice Day Exhibition, 25 September 2018, Dakar, Senegal -- ‘The High-Level Ministerial (HLM) Conference on Rice: Delivering on Commitments to Transform Africa's Rice Industry Conference’ was held on 25 September within the context of the Senegal Rice Day. The HLM Conference consisted of panel discussions on issues related to the improvement of the rice value chain to accelerate rice self-sufficiency in Africa. The HLM Conference was co-organized by the Government of Senegal, African Union Commission (AUC), the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Agency, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Senegalese Institute of Agricultural Research (ISRA), and AfricaRice.
AfricaRice launches $2-million inland valley project in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana -- Key stakeholders gathered together at the Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) headquarters, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on 19 June 2018, to formally launch a landmark project aimed at boosting food, nutrition and income security of rural communities in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana through productive and sustainable use of inland valleys for rice-based systems, while conserving land and water resources.
• EU/IFAD Investments in agricultural research to enhance development outcomes and impact About 40 participants attended a workshop organized by IFAD on ‘EU/IFAD Investments in Agricultural Research. Towards sustainable agriculture, climate-smart rural transformation and social development’, 24-25 May 2018, at AfricaRice Headquarters, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The goal of the workshop was to provide a platform for grant recipients, mainly CGIAR researchers and partners, to demonstrate how the projects supported by EU/IFAD in West and Central Africa contribute to the development of farming systems based on technologies and innovations in the context of food and nutrition security and climate change. The participants discussed ways to generate and strengthen synergies and complementarities in order to respond to issues facing smallholder farming communities. Importance was given to share experiences and identify actions on how research can contribute to development outcomes and impacts.
• JICA delegation led by Director General of Rural Development Department visits AfricaRice to strengthen partnership A delegation led by Mr Kenichi Shishido, Director General, Rural Development Department, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Tokyo, Japan, visited AfricaRice, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on 2 May 2018. The objective of the visit was to further strengthen the partnership between JICA and AfricaRice and explore possible new areas of collaboration in order to boost the rice sector in Africa in general, and in Côte d’Ivoire in particular, as well as other strategic issues. Mr Shishido was accompanied by Ms Asuka Shibuya, Assistant Director, Team 5, Rural Development Department and two members of the JICA Office in Côte d’Ivoire, Mr Yukichi Usui, Deputy Resident Representative and Ms Adeline Balo, Consultant, Agriculture, Rural Development and Industry. AfricaRice Director General Dr Harold Roy-Macauley and members of his team warmly received the JICA delegation and briefed them on the range of AfricaRice research-for-development activities carried out in Côte d’Ivoire, including capacity development programs. The discussions touched upon the JICA-AGRA initiative ‘Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD)’ as well as new initiatives by AfricaRice, such as the ‘Continental Investment Plan for accelerating Rice Self-Sufficiency in Africa (CIPRiSSA)’, the Rice Value Chain Resource Center and a pan-African breeder and foundation seed capital for rice at the AfricaRice Research Station in M’bé, Bouaké.

Participants of a “Consultation workshop on comparative rice competitiveness: lessons learnt on successful development of rice value chains in Asia for West Africa”, 29 Jan – 1 Feb 2018, AfricaRice, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire More than 55 participants, mainly from Africa and Asia, are attending the consultation workshop, which is jointly organized by AfricaRice, the World Bank and CORAF/WECARD. The main objective of the workshop is to improve the suitability and relevance of guiding principles drawn from a study of Asian countries for the development of effective and efficient rice value chains in West Africa. Participants include key stakeholders active in rice value chains, representatives from governments of selected countries, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, development partners, the donor community, financial institutions and research organizations.

AfricaRice Director General Dr Harold Roy-Macauley underlines the importance of research in agricultural development plans at the Africa Agri Forum 2017. The Africa Agri Forum 2017 was organized in partnership with OCP Africa, 18-19 October 2017 in Abidjan, under the aegis of the Ivorian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The theme of the Forum was “Agricultural Development Plans: The Winning Approach.” About 200 participants representing government authorities, international organizations, financial institutions, investors, agribusiness, agro-industries, research centers, academia, farmers’ cooperatives attended the Africa Agri Forum 2017, which serves as a platform for exchanges between African and international experts as well as actors in the agricultural world. AfricaRice signed a Host Agreement with the Integrated Breeding Platform (IBP). The Agreement was signed by Dr Harold Roy-Macauley, AfricaRice Director General, and Dr David Hoisington, Chair of the IBP Board of Directors in the presence of representatives of both organizations and special invitees. The IBP, with its broad experience in developing plant breeding tools and AfricaRice with its expertise in research and development of the rice value chain, will combine their efforts to modernize rice breeding in Africa so that smallholder farmers can have access to improved and resilient rice varieties to face a changing climate. The IBP Board of Directors took this opportunity to hold its annual meeting at AfricaRice in Abidjan from 11 to 13 October 2017. This was an ideal occasion for the Board to meet local partners and users of the IBP services as well as to understand the critical role AfricaRice is playing in R4D in Africa, and how IBP and AfricaRice can create synergy through stronger collaboration.

Prof. Jones was co-winner of the prestigious "World Food Prize" in 2004, awarded for the development of the New Rice for Africa (NERICA) as a researcher at AfricaRice (ex-WARDA). AfricaRice Director General Dr Harold Roy-Macauley led H.E. Prof. Jones on a guided tour of the AfricaRice Headquarters.

His Excellency Dr Gerd Müller, Federal German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, inaugurated the Green Innovation Center on 3 January 2016 at AfricaRice research station in Cotonou, Benin, to boost agricultural productivity, increase the incomes of smallholder farmers and processors and create job opportunities, particularly for youth and women, in the country.
