Nine years ago, freshmen twin sisters Lucy and Josie Gallina walked the red carpet in Los Angeles and proceeded to win a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award that night.
“When I was 5 [years old], 'Boardwalk Empire' was up for a SAG award, and since I was a supporting role, they flew me out to Los Angeles [LA] for a few days,” Josie said. “I got to go to the award show, I walked the red carpet, I stopped for the paparazzi, and we ended up winning the award show. We won best drama, and I still remember it like it was yesterday.”
Lucy said that she and Josie scored their first big role when they were around 2 years old. They played Emily Schroeder – the main character’s daughter – on the HBO show "Boardwalk Empire" for four seasons.
“I started [acting] when I was six and a half months old. My dad is a surgeon and one of his nurses knew a manager,” Lucy said. “She told him that they love twins in the acting industry, especially when they are younger. I’ve been with that manager ever since.”
Josie said that the acting industry loves identical twins because they can work double the hours to play the same roles.
“[Lucy and I] would play the same roles and work double the hours we could work [individually] because of child labor laws,” Josie said.
Lucy and Josie talk about their experiences with "Boardwalk Empire," and winning the SAG Award.
Lucy said that another movie that they starred in together was a Hallmark movie called "Christmas with Holly," as Holly, and Lucy played young Peggy Sheeran in "The Irishman."
Josie also played a part in the movies "The Brooklyn Banker" and "Tapestry."
“My best experience filming was definitely when I filmed 'The Irishman,'” Lucy said. “I filmed it in 2017, and it came out last year. It’s with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, so a lot of well-known people. I also went to the SAG awards in L.A. for that last January, which was amazing. I met so many people and it was amazing and a great experience.”
Lucy and Josie both agreed that auditioning is the biggest challenge. Lucy called it “annoying” and Josie referred to it as “a dreadful process.”
Josie said that she doesn’t enjoy acting as much as she used to, and she isn’t planning on doing anything at the moment.
“It’s only exciting when it’s a callback and you already went through the first audition process [so] you know they like you,” Josie said. “Acting in movies is very fun – going on set, and meeting all the actors you’re working with; that’s very interesting, but auditions themselves are very dull, and it’s just not my thing anymore. As of right now, I don’t think I’ll be doing anything.”
Josie said that she loves to see people their age acting, and being successful because it is inspirational.
“I like Mckenna Grace because she is 14, like me, and she is in everything. She actually beat me out for a role once,” Josie said. “I auditioned for the movie 'Gifted' and I got a callback, but they went with her.”
Lucy and Josie said that they are so grateful for their mom, Lisa Gallina, and that she played a huge part in everything they [have] accomplished.
“My mom quit her job to drive me to auditions when I was one year old,” Josie said. “She drives me everywhere, she takes me to set, she stays with me on the long nights working, and I honestly would not be able to do half the stuff that I do if it weren’t for her.”
Lisa said that Lucy and Josie do a great job balancing their lives to be able to work at such a young age, and that it will help make them successful at whatever they choose to do in the future.
“I am so proud of the way that they have each other’s backs,” Lisa said. “As they got older they stopped sharing roles and started competing for roles. The [positive] way they handled it if one got the role and one didn’t would probably be my biggest pride.”
Lucy said that the most important part is to always keep trying and stay motivated no matter what, just as she is following her dreams of becoming an actress when she grows up.
Throughout her acting journey Lucy found that “all of the opportunities that you don’t get are always going to lead up to the best opportunities, if you keep working hard and are motivated.”
