'Botallack is an incredible building because you get a real sense of the connection back to the past'

Margaret Mitchell, Series Producer

Botallack is part of one of the UK's largest World Heritage Sites which stretches from the bottom of Cornwall right up to West Devon. Enjoy a walk along the spectacular South West Coast Path, where you'll see the remains of two of Cornwall's 'champion mines'', Botallack and Levant.

National Trust's nearby Levant Mine and Beam Engine working showcase, is free of entry to National Trust of Guernsey members.

'The mine under the sea.'

Levant Mine.

Levant was known as 'the mine under the sea' with undersea levels stretching over a mile. The stories of men, women and children who worked here are waiting to be uncovered by National Trust. The 1840 beam engine which raised the copper and tin-ore has been restored and still runs on steam today.

Ruins of the industry that defined Cornwall in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, lie all around and include Botallack. The stories of the mine and those who worked here are enlivened by NT tour guides, when you can hear the clink of hammers in the cliff-top dressing room as children break the copper ore with bal-maiden hammers.

Botallack Count House: 'spectacular cliff-edge mine workings' - partly converted into a cosy cottage for two by the National Trust. Choose your view - the turbulent Atlantic or a sheltered garden.

The Count House at Botallack stands on the cliff-edge, near the mine workings. Built during the 1860's at the height of the Cornish mining boom, the Count House was the hub of day-to-day rnning of the mine and also where the miners collected their pay. What is a Count House?

The outstanding environment with National Trust trails, the Levant showcase exhibition, many protected view points and special places, merits thinking about staying a little longer at Botallack Count House? Stay a little longer

If you're staying at NT's Botallack Count House cottage, there's free entry to NT sites on production of booking forms but staying or not, NTG Members enjoy free entry to nearby NT properties and places.

'An easy choice for NT members. Do the woodland walk. Go down to the beach and around to the west. Get a tub of ice-cream and eat it down by the river'

Review of Tregwainton Garden

National Trust of Guernsey members will enjoy free entry to nearby Tregwainton Garden. The country house of Tregwainton has been in the stewardship of the National Trust since 1961. The gardens are noted for a collection of exotic trees and shrubs, with a position offering views over Mount's Bay and The Lizard. For a near coastal position in something of a micro-climate, Tregwainton is described as a sheltered garden bursting with exotic trees and shrubs.

Shining a light on Cornwall's mining heritage

Since 2006, Botallack Mine has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. The Cornish coast, its coastal pathways and environment are under the watchful eye of World Heritage Organisation and National Trust.
