Well, according to them....as a Californian then it feels just like home....although some of the thermometers today’s were registering 36 and 38 degrees. Yesterday was such a quiet day so today i headed back to Old Pollensa Town. Why did i go back? Simple...because today WASN’T market day. Pollensa is a beautiful little town that is a few miles from the coast at Puerto Pollensa. Little did they know when they town was build back centuries ago that people would flock to visit it....and climb the 365 steps to Calvary Church at the top of the hill!
But. OnMarket day it is thronged....with over 300 stalls and thousands visiting more for the market that the town itself. I was going to replicate one of Ted’s favourite things to do.....have a lovely Latte Machiato in Calvert Square at the foot of the steps. Today it was hot, very hot, but far quieter and a great way to see the town.
After planning my trip to get the bus that took us via Cala San Vincente, a small village across the other side of the mountains from Puerto Pollensa, we got a bit of a tour on the service bus! Great value for 1.5 Euros each! I realise now that i get in a loot of places free....due to my restricted travel between venues!
We arrive in Pollensa and they are setting up for Fiesta Time. One of the Squares was being transformed into a stag area with rigs, lights and speakers for the planned entertainment! At the back of the square is one of Pollensa’s hidden gems....one of ours churches. It is a large building but from the outside due to the closeness of the buildings round it you Woolley be forgiven for missing it. But they had been before and wanted to visit again. It is beautiful and unlike last time all most empty. Outside the sun produced all consuming heat but here was a natural cavern of coolness and darkness with a capacity for over 400 worshippers along with many smaller ‘chapels’ up and down both sides.
The Church, Santa Maria Del Angels, is a hidden gem and a great place to sit in solitude for a few minutes.

From here we venture to the little square at the foot of Calvary steps and enjoy a cold drink and a latte machiato! Bliss! Sitting people watching as some set off on the steps up to the church at the top of the hill or those coming back down is quite entertaining.
The Church, http://www.pollensa.com/en/places/to-visit/el-calvari/ , is so small compared to Santa Maria but the quest to climb the steps adds something to the location of this church. It’s congregation really want to go there to climb the steps in that heat! The two guitarists are there as normal plying for trade. In fact, one of them has been there every time they have climbed the steps numerous times over the last 10 years or som they haven been visiting here.
Shopping seems to be the main event of the day and the town has some very quaint and stylish shops selling a large variety of local and island goods. They even manage to get a ‘free’ bottle of gin to take home! Well, the bottle is empty....but apparently they are collecting them for a wedding or some such thing!
Before there know it it is time for the bus and they make it on the bus just as it becomes full and some other passengers are left waiting.
I have an ice cream on my return to Puerto Pollensa then I spend time working on my tan for the afternoon! It is all thirsty work and i earned my beer at the end of the day!
I’m quite enjoying my new job...this could become habit forming!
