Pure Michigan Pick-Ups A drive up north turned into a sneaker pickup

Thanksgivings are traditionally characterized by a big feast and the occasional family political dispute. But for Ethan Ziolek, a senior at Community High, his Thanksgiving was characterized by a new pair of sneakers, paid for by his grandmother.

On the way up to the Northern Peninsula of Michigan, Ziolek and his family took a pit stop at a Nike outlet store in Howell, Michigan. His grandmother, being an avid basketball fan, wanted to get her grandson a sweet pair of sneakers.

“She always loved basketball… Kentucky Basketball,” Ziolek said. “[One time], Duke and Kentucky were playing and my Grandfather is a Duke fan. And Duke started winning, and my Grandpa started talking trash, and she pulled a knife on him and chased him around the house with a kitchen knife.”

The shoes are re-releases of the classic Air Jordan Ones, shoes that embody the prestige and swagger of Hall-of-Fame NBA player Michael Jordan early in his career. The shoes were banned by the NBA for violating their dress code in 1984 before they were released to the public, in 1985. This model was released Oct. 2013, and features an embroidered gold swoosh, a feature not commonly seen with previous Air Jordan One models.

And the shirt? It is from a thrift store called ‘Goldmine,’ located in Bay View, close Burt Lake in the southern peninsula of Michigan. The neutral tones of the beige shirt and the light-wash denim are juxtaposed with the deep red in the shoes. It is difficult to pull off a fusion of basketball shoes and a just-got-back-from-vacation look, but Ziolek does it well.
