Mitski "Be The Cowboy" Finds Camaraderie in Isolation Gina Liu

Mitski, the 27 year-old Japanese-American proclaimed indie/alternative queen has such a strong reputation amongst so many genres of music because of her ability to transcend situations and make listeners feel the exact emotion they she wants them to feel. On her newest album, "Be the Cowboy," Mitski explores the array of emotions found in our lives in everyday conversations and happenings. The single “Nobody” is set to a upbeat melody and the addictive pop chorus is juxtaposed with lyrics that show frustration and pity in loneliness. Songs like "Remember My Name" also show diversity in rhythm and subject matter as it bounces around an aggressive guitar melody and discusses being hurt and forgotten in a relationship.

While some of her songs like "Two Slow Dancers" and "Old Friend" are slower and harder to jive to, her most in-depth lyrics and complex rhythms are featured on these songs. She sounds as if she is hesitating to share as she used to in her past works, as to show the audience that she has complete control of her lyrics. "Old Friend" details Mitski and an old partner, both having moved onto different relationships but still holding nostalgic feelings for each other. Her story of trying to meet up with her old friend resonates with those who have tried reconnecting with past friends and understand the feeling that comes with seeing them again.

Her songs are violent with emotion: desire, pain, and empowerment are all common themes throughout her discography but they are not wrapped up in a neat little box. You can still hear her angst that has driven her biggest hits to success: songs like "Your Best American Girl" describe frustrations that come with being in love with someone who is outside of your realm, most particularly her struggles finding love in someone outside her culture. Some of her most famous lyrics, "your mother wouldn’t approve of how my mother raised me," still hold true in her newest album in the form of emotions and angst slowly inflating before exploding in the form of epic guitar and synth solos. "Geyser" might be the best example of this on the album; literally describing herself as a geyser about to blow up. Her use of metaphor and real-life experiences create a comprehensive album that brings up feelings you never thought you had.

No Mitski album is complete without angst and additional pop nuances, and "Be the Cowboy" is no exception. She has created the persona of an idol who controls what others see of her and how her own listeners feel when they hear her music. With "Be the Cowboy," Mitski puts another addictive character – hesitant and calculated, yet ready to burst – into the universe.
