20 good things to happen in 2020 As the year wraps up, lets go through some of the good that came out of 2020

TIGER KING BROUGHT US TOGETHER

In the first few months of quarantine, all you cool cats and kittens were able to laugh together with Netflix's 'Tiger King.' We can all agree that Carol Baskin did, in fact, kill her husband- wacked him.

CENTURY-OLD PEOPLE BEAT COVID-19

Stories of 101, 102 and 103 year-olds surviving COVID have surfaced across the internet. These men and women lived amidst the Spanish Flu! These inspiring moments remind us all that we all have something to be thankful for.

PET ADOPTION & FOSTERING SKYROCKETED

Many animal shelters and pounds across the nation are witnessing the best-possible-scenario: empty kennels! An overwhelming amount of applications to foster and adopt cats and dogs have swept the nation. If anybody deserves a good 2020, I'd say its our furry friends.

TIKTOK BECAME THE LATEST GEN-Z TREND

Whether you're watching the Hype House or have stumbled into frog-tok, TikTok has provided Gen-Z a much needed outlet during these masked times. Throughout quarantine, creators continue to entertain, provide tips and tricks, and remind us that there is a community for every interest.

PARASITE TAKES HOME A WIN

A well-deserved win, the South-Korean film took home the gold. 'Parasite' is an incredible black-comedy/thriller, directed by Bong Joon-ho (pictured to the right). Despite being released late 2019, many people took the time over this ten-month-long-break to watch the award-winning screenplay. If you haven't seen it yet, make some popcorn, gather blankets, and grab your family for a fantastic at-home movie night.

HIGHEST VOTER TURNOUT IN MODERN HISTORY

With a projected 161 million American votes, the November 2020 presidential election had the highest voter turnout since 1900. A nail-biting and hair-pulling endeavor, 66.8% of eligible voters filled out their ballots and sent them to be counted. This year's election is also notable in its expansion of access to mail-in ballots and early voting.

AFRICA DECLARED FREE OF POLIO

As of August 25th, Africa is free from wild poliovirus according to the World Health Organization (WHO). All 47 countries in the WHO's African region have officially eradicated the virus.

SPACEX SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED TWO ASTRONAUTS INTO ORBIT

On May 30th, SpaceX became the first private company to send astronauts to the International Space Station. This was the first crew launch on American soil in nine years! Despite the pandemic, SpaceX has had 24 successful launches, 23 orbital flights - and may continue with a launch of a large satellite through December. Thank you Mr. Musk!

FLAVORTOWN, OHIO

A change.org petition to rename Columbus, Ohio's name to Flavortown, Ohio has racked up over 130,000 signatures. Guy Fieri is proud.

CRYSTAL-CLEAR WATERS IN VENICE

For the first time in a long time Venice, Italy's canals flowed with crystal-clear water. Although usually clouded, multiple month-long quarantines have left Venice's waterways under-polluted. Fish, and even dolphin have been spotted swimming along the canals.

MOVEMENTS TOWARDS DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent nationwide protests this summer, there has been a powerful and united voice around the idea of achieving social equality and justice through diversity and inclusion initiatives in all aspects of society.

JACKSON NASA HEADQUARTERS

The new NASA headquarters in Washington D.C. has been named after Mary W. Jackson, the first African American female engineer at NASA.

QUARANTINE = LESS POLLUTION

Since March, there has been a notable uptick in air quality as pollution levels have dropped significantly. Some states have taken initiative to continue this trend, with Minnesota offering to pay homeowners to replace their lawns with bee-friendly wildflowers

SAME SEX MARRIAGE WAS LEGALIZED IN COSTA RICA

The Costa Rican Supreme Court of Justice ruled that, as of May 26th, same-sex marriage is legal. This is the first central American country to recognize and perform same-sex marriages. OLDEST FOSSIL OF A MODERN-DAY BIRD WAS FOUND

The "wonderchicken" is the oldest fossil of a modern bird, dating from the age of dinosaurs. This nearly complete skull hidden inside pieces of rock dates back to more than 66 million years!

SECOND PERSON IN THE WORLD CURED OF HIV

A man from London has become the second person in the entire world to be cured of HIV. Adam Castillejo was cured by a stem-cell treatment he was receiving for cancer. The donor stem cells have an uncommon gene that gives them, and thus Mr. Castillejo, protection against HIV.

ANIMAL CROSSING WAS RELEASED ON NINTENDO SWITCH

Released on March 20th, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has connected people around the globe, and across CGHS halls. Rumor has it that Ms. Van Wyk and Ms. Kiely have visited each other's islands!

FLORIDIANS DO SOMETHING RIGHT?!

Florida voters approved a new 15$ minimum wage! Other progressive legislation has been passed across the country- with Colorado voters approving a paid family leave program, and Oregon becoming the first state to decriminalize drug possesion.

OLDIES-BUT-GOODIES MAKE A COMEBACK

The market for drive-in movies, puzzles, and board games has resurfaced since March's quarantine. We've even found new socially distant platforms of entertainment, with livestream concerts and live-cams at zoos being accessible with a click of your mouse.

Congratulations! You've made it to the last month of 2020. This year has been a disaster, to say the least. From terrifying wildfires to murder hornets, from WWIII memes to a literal pandemic- its been a lot. But, you know what? If you're reading this, that means you're still here. Thank you for holding on. Let's welcome in the New Year with hope for a better 2021.
