Community Weekly Dean’s Memo.03 August 30th-September 3rd

The memo serves to provide you community specific weekly updates, deadlines, and inspiration.

Mission Statement:

  • Cab Calloway School of the Arts provides a rigorous curriculum where arts and academics combine to cultivate the development of independent investigation, critical and creative thinking, and the innovative application of acquired skills.
  • Our graduates will demonstrate a mastery of defined skills that will enable them to be productive, self-directed, lifelong learners who appreciate and respect diversity.

  • August 30th: First Day of School (Only 6th and 9th Grade Students)
  • August 31st: All students attending (A1)
  • August 31st: Picture Day (Lifetouch: 6-8th)
  • September 1st: Picture Day (Lifetouch 9-10th)
  • September 1st: High School Play Audition (2:30 PM-6:00 PM: Courtyard)
  • September 2nd: Picture Day (Lifetouch 11-12th)
  • September 2nd: High School Play Audition (2:30 PM-6:00 PM: Courtyard)
  • September 3rd: High School Play Audition (2:30 PM-6:00 PM: Courtyard)

Welcome Back to the 2021-22 School Year
  • First Day of School: Monday, August 30th for 6th and 9th grade.
  • First Day Schedule
  • Tuesday, August 31st for grades 7, 8, and 10-12.
  • During the first week, students will participate in a welcome back assembly that will include a review of community expectations, orientation of Safety and Covid-19 protocols, and review of the student code of conduct.
  • Students will receive their Computers and Student Code of Conduct during the first week.
  • All students will receive their schedules on the first day.
  • 6th and 9th will have a 8 period day on August 30, 2021
  • 6th Grade Students will receive an orientation and cafeteria seat assignment on Monday.
  • 9th Grade students will receive a welcome back orientation on Monday and cafeteria seat assignment.
  • All students will start on A1 Rotation on August 31, 2021, which will be a four day period.
  • Lunches will be held on A days Period 3 and B days Period 7.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
  • Doors will open at 6:50 AM.
  • Schools Bell Schedule: 7:25 AM - 2:15 PM
  • All students will have an option to receive breakfast.
  • Upon arrival before 7:15 AM, Middle School students will report to the cafeteria.
  • Upon arrival before 7:20 AM, 9-10th grade students will report to the gym.
  • Upon arrival before 7:13 AM, 11-12th grade students will report to theatre.
  • 9th-12th graders will have the option to receive grab and go breakfast, but they must eat in the gym.
  • Students will be supervised upon arrival and in each assigned area.
  • Students will be dismissed to go to class at starting at 7:13 AM- 7:20 AM.
  • This procedure and process is designed to ensure supervision of students from 6:50 AM- 7:20 AM.
  • Students entering into the building after 7:15 AM will report to homeroom.
  • In addition, this process limits having students arrive early to class.
  • Students who are late arrivals and early dismissals, must sign in and out using a QR code located in the front office.

  • Please note that Study Hall will be held in the Theatre. Students will be orientated on study hall expectations.
  • Study Hall numbers will initially be high, but administration and counseling department will offer Senior and Junior privilege, along with adjust schedules based on change form request.

Student Data Cards

  • After receiving your child's "Student Data Card", please complete and return to the school as soon as possible.

Covid-19 Testing and Process

  • If your child has received their Covid vaccines, it is suggested you submit documentation to the school nurse.
  • We are offering onsite weekly Covid-19 testing (optional) here at Cab Calloway beginning mid September. More information forthcoming.
  • Remember to have your child perform the Daily Self Screener: (Click on Hyperlink)
  • Click on the below button to follow the COVID-19 Process Map for staff and students.
  • There will be a letter shared with the community if we were to have a positive case in the building.
  • The nurse will inform families of students who may have an exposure in case of a reported case.
  • Students who are absent due to Covid protocol will be marked as excused.

Medication/Action Plans:

  • If your child requires any prescription medication while on campus, please see the nurse's web page below to determine which form/forms will need to be completed.
  • Send medication into school by a responsible individual. Medication containers must be properly labeled with correct name, time, dose, date and prescribing licensed healthcare provider.
  • Students are not permitted to self-carry any medications, with the except of an inhalers or Epinephrine once appropriate paperwork is complete- plese see nurse's web site below for details.

  • Last Reminder
  • Health Screening: Complete the COVID-19 self-screener prior to coming to school every day. Stay home if you are experiencing signs and/or symptoms of illness.
  • Masks & Face Coverings: Universal indoor mask wearing will be required in accordance with the Governor’s Declaration of a Public Health Emergency issued.
  • Hand Sanitizer Stations: Maintained in every school.
  • Student Transportation: Masks are federally required on all public transportation. Buses are sanitized daily and equipped with hand-sanitizer dispensers.
  • Cafeteria: Students will be seated in an assigned location in the cafeteria. There are QR codes assigned to each table for students to register upon seating.
  • There will be outside seating for lunch as well.
  • Administration Protocol: This is an outline of how we will support and guide students who do not adhere to mask wearing.

Cab Calloway Excellence

Ava Barton

  • We congratulate our very own Ava who entered into Khan Academy's Junior Breakthrough competition which is a global video competition.
  • Ava has been named one of the fifteen worldwide finalists in the competition!
  • The challenge is to explain a complex scientific idea with a short film in 3 minutes.
  • This is very exciting and if she is named the first place winner, she’ll get a $250,000 scholarship prize along with a $100,000 prize for the Cab science department.
  • On September 21st, the top winner will be announced.

AP Capstone Program

  • Take a look at our students experience with our AP Capstone Program during the 2020-2021 School.
  • Mrs. Pruitt and her students conducted professional development this past week to promote the AP Capstone and explain how the program advocates for student voice.

  • This survey allows for the Cab Calloway Administration and Staff to be proactive in assessing the need of our students and families.
  • The completion of the survey is optional, but could be helpful in preparation for the school year.
I am excited about this upcoming school year and believe in the power of Community Care as we look to support each Cab Calloway Community student, teacher, and family throughout this school year.
