Introduction
Project Definition
Our task is to give our users an easier method of tracking maintenance cycles, giving them peace of mind about their car through allowing their car to perform and last longer. The tasks are separated into two main categories:
- Keeping track of mileage driven and time between maintenance
- Informing users of their vehicle’s maintenance cycles
Problems with Existing Software
Your car's dashboard only gives users indicators during or right before the car's malfunction and does not give the user the ability to plan maintenance in advance. Another example is CARFAX. There have been reports of them providing inaccurate information with the history of the vehicle and its current conditions.
The Current Experience
How People Do the Task
Most of the users we talked to wait until the car has a problem as their indication that it needs maintenance. Many rely on the dashboard to notify them but no matter the method many had semi-regular maintenance habits for common stuff like oil changes but for everything else they just waited for something to go wrong before doing any maintenance
What is Wrong with the Current Way
Having an easily accessible predetermined maintenance plan with preemptive maintenance keeps your car running longer, can help avoid costly repairs, and most importantly give you peace of mind.
The Vision
With our app we want to make car maintenance easy and approachable for everyone. For common maintenance users are given easy to follow customizable maintenance plans that removes the stress of having to remember everything yourself. For unexpected car troubles users are given the tools to diagnose and learn about the issue and decide how they want to handle the situation. If the user wants to handle it themselves they are provided with helpful information as well as written instruction and video tutorials. If they don't want to handle it themselves the app assists them in finding a trusted mechanic they can take the car to.
The Result
Overall the users had a positive outlook on the application interface with suggestions for better maintenance products functionalities, redesign filters and FAQ, improve navigation with back arrow and car detail buttons, and improvements in the menu system for better usability and icons. The interface was well received for its good use of icons, general ease of usage, good home button, and the diagnostic view for the interior and exterior of the car.
