Honors College December Graduate Virtual Celebration

Save the date for the Honors College December virtual celebration which will be held on Friday, December 18 at 2 pm on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We hope you will join us in celebrating our December graduates and post a positive note on our social media feed. Make sure to tag #jmuhonorsclassof2020. Congrats grads! We look forward to seeing what the future holds for you!

Student Programming Updates

  • Student programming in the Honors College continues to be primarily virtual, but we have introduced a few drop-in opportunities for students to pick up yummy treats at Hillcrest and to flex their creativity muscles with a fall coloring contest. We also planned safe, socially distant celebrations for our student volunteers and student workers. Looking to spring semester, programming will continue to be primarily virtual for the foreseeable future, with continued drop-in opportunities for students to participate in activities on their own. Virtual programming will include monthly Toolbox Workshops, Honors Book Club, Honors Trivia Nights, and TEDTalk Tuesday offerings. Additionally we’ll be adding virtual Major Mixers to help students get to know other Honors students with similar academic interests, further exploring creative programs for students who enjoy DIY and craft projects as a way to alleviate stress, and launching Work in Progress, an informal writing group that will provide students working on their Capstone projects with supportive peer accountability.
  • Please Be Part of the Symposium Audience! Honors is excited to offer the virtual Honors Symposium to be held via Zoom on Friday, December 11 at 12:00 p.m. The session will last approximately an hour and a half. The Honors Symposium showcases academic research and creative scholarship by JMU Honors students. We have seven students lined up to share their unique research areas, with diverse topics ranging from leadership to nursing and climate change. Each presenter will share their research in a brief presentation, and audience members will be able to participate in a Q&A. If you are interested in joining as part of the audience, please RSVP no later than Wednesday, December 9.

Wifi Project Complete

Do you need more places to study and attend virtual classes? The Honors College, working with JMU telecom, has just completed a WiFi extension project. We recognized that the spaces outside of Hillcrest House lacked a strong WiFi signal so, we added four extenders. Now the front porch, back yard, side porch, and Annex all have strong internet! This will provide additional spaces for students to study, take online courses, and visit with friends while adhering to safe social distancing guidelines. We hope you enjoy this new service on the nice winter days and especially during the beautiful spring days we love so much at Madison.
