Spring Semester Begins January 22, 2020

EAGLE SCHOLARS

We are currently taking applications through February 15, 2020 for the 2020 - 21 EAGLE Scholars Program. Through this exciting scholarship and leadership development program, outstanding students will be chosen to receive $8,000 per year, the possibility of a study-abroad scholarship, and the opportunity to participate in a series of leadership and professional development programs.

Spring Meet and Greet

School of Accountancy students are invited to attend the first Spring Meet and Greet. The event will be on Thursday, January 30 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm in Scianna Hall. This event provides an opportunity for students to learn more about careers and opportunities within the accounting field, as well as network with companies in order to develop future contacts and employment prospects. The event also provides recruiting firms a chance to meet and connect with potential candidates from USM to discuss summer leadership program opportunities and to fill positions within their companies for full-time and internship positions. All accounting students and alumni are encouraged to attend, regardless of graduation date.

USM Economic Development Graduates in high demand

Mississippi Business Journal featured the Southern Miss Economic Development Master's program in the December 2019 issue. The article discussed the demand for graduates and the evolution of the Economic Development field over the years.

“The master’s program in economic development at Southern Mississippi has a rich history and is highly regarded around the [country] among economic development practitioners,” said Chad E. Newell, president of the Area Development Partnership in Hattiesburg.

Forbes Under 30

"I was elated to know that I was selected to attend this year. It was an honor to diversify my business experience and apply the principles I am learning at USM," said Hawkins.

School of Marketing student Xavier Hawkins was recently selected for the Forbes Under 30 Scholars Program. Forbes invited select undergraduate and graduate students under the age of 30 from all over the world to Detroit for the annual event. Attendees had the opportunity to network with corporations, startups, peers, and professionals during engaging seminars, demonstrations, socials, and contests. Hawkins also said his mentors indicated that he is the first African American Forbes Under 30 Scholar from Southern Miss. Hawkins is a senior marketing major, a Luckyday Scholar, and a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Beta Gamma Sigma's Annual Canned Food Drive

The Beta Gamma Sigma Canned Food Drive was a huge success! Over 2,000 canned goods were donated by students, faculty, and staff in the College of Business and Economic Development to help provide for the needy in our area during this year’s holiday season. All cans were donated to Christian Services in Hattiesburg.

Fall 2019 Finals Week

Even if it is finals week, we still have fun!

Study snacks and pizza were provided throughout the week for students needing a little extra fuel before exams. Several students also took advantage of a much needed study break to watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with some of our faculty and staff in the McDonnell Auditorium!
