Giraffe Information Report by Kadie

Towering over the African Plains, the majestic Giraffe can be spotted clearly with their long necks. They also have long wobbly legs that take them long distances. Giraffes can also grow up to 16-18ft tall which is also about 5m tall. Giraffes are the tallest land animal. They have a sort of yellow skin with brown patches mixed around their bodys or with snow white skin all over their bodies. These are Albino Giraffes. Baby Giraffes are born with little tiny horns and as they grow older, their horns start to grow too! They have long blue tongues as well! They are also pretty lofty animals that are definitely fabulous.

Giving them what they need in their lifetime, Giraffes have lives in the Savannah's, Grasslands and the Woodlands. Giraffes prefer areas that have big open lands and large acacia trees so they can eat easily. Most Giraffes live in East Africa, or in Angola and Zambia South West. Since they are animals that live in groups of 15-20 other Giraffes they are fine with most living conditions.

Giraffes grow up in years (as we do) and they can live up to 25 years old. They are known to become fully mature at the age of 3-5. When they get old enough, the babies set off and try to find their own group called a ‘herd’. They can have kids by 3 years old! That sounds young, but to a giraffe that is just the right age! They can usually reach sexual maturity between the ages of five and seven years. They can also weigh from 800 to 930kg!

Giraffes are herbivores and have a specific diet for their eating. They mostly like to eat Acacia Trees. Giraffes use their long tongues to wrap around the branch and rip all the leaves off. They prefer not to eat the branch. They can eat hundreds of pounds of food in just 1 day! Imagine how much they eat in a lifetime! During the dry season, Giraffes switch from Acacia Trees to Evergreen Trees, but switch back after the dry season.

Giraffes with their long necks and majestic bodys, would look like a good big meal to other animals where they live. But it's not just animals that are causing Giraffes to go extinct. It's humans too! They kill giraffes for their naturally beautiful skin and head! What they are hunted most for is their tails. In the wild, Giraffes tails are cut off and the Giraffes are just left there to bleed to death. They use the Giraffe tails to make fly swats!

In conclusion Giraffes are endangered because they get poached. Just minding their own business, eating acacia or evergreen trees. They have done nothing wrong but try to stay alive in the wild! Let's stop killing Giraffes so they won't go extinct!!
