CYBERSAFETY NIGHT Many thanks to the group of about 30 parents who attended last Thursday night’s Cybersafety forum, conducted by Detective Tracey Porter. It was an enlightening, if at times sobering session, with Tracey highlighting the measures we, as adults, ought to take to ensure the safety of our children and students in the online world. She drew many ‘real-life’ analogies, the most powerful of which was that we would never think of leaving car doors and houses unlocked, yet not being cautious about privacy settings in various apps, and the provision of personal information online is, in a sense, the online equivalent. She also spoke about resilience, ensuring that we as adults are familiar with the games and sites our children are visiting, and that she is always a ‘friend’ of her own children if they are on facebook or similar. It was a shame that more weren’t in attendance on the night, but chat to those who were and it might influence you to attend the next session in the future.
SCHOOL DANCES Don’t forget to book up your tickets sooner rather than later as any unallocated tickets as of September 10 will become available to anyone, so don’t miss out!

PLANNING WEEK Next week (September 10-14) will be planning week across the school.
Throughout the week all classroom teachers will be timetabled to spend a whole day planning for Term 4, along with the other teachers in their team. Specialist teachers also receive time throughout the week to plan for the following term. Together, teachers reflect and provide feedback on the learning that has occurred across this term, discuss student data that has been collected and use this information to inform future planning.
The teaching and learning for Term 4 will be discussed and planned, with planners being developed for English and Mathematics. Inquiry units, will be also be reviewed and planned. Common assessment tasks will also be documented and excursions and in school activities researched and booked.
Planning Week allows our staff the opportunity to engage in professional discussions and develop the rich, differentiated learning programs that allow our students to engage fully in their learning.
Teaching teams will plan on the following days with students having specialist lessons for the day:
- Monday- Year 6,
- Tuesday – Foundation,
- Wednesday – Year 4,
- Thursday – Year 5 & Year 3,
- Friday – Year 1 and Year 2
THE DEPARTMENT’S NEW PARENTING WEBSITE IS NOW LIVE
The Education Department has launched a new parenting website to give parents and carers of children aged from birth to five years access to reliable, evidence-based information and advice on raising young children.
The new website will give parents confidence that they’re accessing information and links they can rely on. It will also help connect them with key parenting services like Parentline and the 24-hour Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Line.
The launch of the website follows the recently released MCH App and recognises the importance of providing self-service supports for parents to access at times and places that suit them.
The parenting website includes parent-friendly information and advice about:
- choosing early childhood education and care services
- sleep, safety, health and nutrition, and behaviour and development for children up to five years of age
- services and supports for parents in Victoria such as the MCH Service, MCH Line, and Parentline
- other reliable websites where users can access more detailed information and advice such as Raising Children Network and Better Health Channel.
For more on the new website, see: Parenting website
Parents can also phone the MCH Line on 13 22 29, 24 hours a day to speak to an MCH nurse, phone Parentline on 13 22 89, download the MCH App or see the Raising Children Network or Better Health Channel
Have a great week.

Year 3 Sustainability & Design Inquiry Unit Action Project Design and work together for our planet’s future. The Year 3’s second Inquiry Unit for 2018 was all about design and sustainability. Many of the students became passionate about the sustainability issues we face and decided they would like to educate others by building a website. The students were broken up in to their groups to develop the content they wanted to include with everyone’s ideas coming through with text, photos, graphs and links to further information. This group of students would like to share their work and hope to inspire more people to work together for our planet’s future.
VIEWBANK PRESCHOOL VISIT On Monday 3rd September, 5C enjoyed a visit to Viewbank Preschool. The Year 5 students spent time reading some of the kinder groups favourite books to them and then enjoyed a personal tour of the outdoor playground area, led by our new friends in Red Group. We chatted about the preschool group coming up to school next year and about all the wonderful things they have to look forward to once they begin school. Thanks for having us Red Group and your lovely teachers, Barb and Merrin, we can’t wait to see you wondering around at Viewbank PS as Foundation students in 2019.
Viewbank PS Kindness Project The message is spreading! We have had some lovely visitors coming in to the Foundation rooms to help spread some kindness! Josh did a fantastic job showing Mrs Nicholls how to paint her rock. A big ‘Thank you!’ to all the parents/grandparents/little brothers and sisters who have helped us so far.
