A Day to Remember Faithful fans urge wolfpack to victory over notre dame

The day didn't exactly go as scripted.

Every ticket was sold, the field was painted and a variety of special events were planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Carter-Finley Stadium.

But Hurricane Matthew had other plans.

More than six inches of water fell in Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday. A total that ended up being more than the number of points surrendered by the Wolfpack defense.

And in spite of the conditions, Wolfpack Nation, more than 25,000 strong, donned ponchos and garbage bags, wrapped their phones in ziplocks and cheered like their lives depended on it.

And although the day didn't go exactly as planned, it was still a special day.

-------

A day when a water-logged ball miraculously cleared the crossbar to put the first points on the board.

-------

A rainy day that couldn't stop a rainy Dayes

The Pack's senior running back ran for 126 yards on 23 muddy, sloppy carries - more than double the total of the entire Fighting Irish team.

-------

A day when the starting offensive line played every snap and gave new meaning to getting down and dirty in the trenches.

-------

And when the coaching staff called for the "Monsoon Package" -

which saw Jalan McClendon bulldozing his way for 56 rushing yards on 10 carries and a 2-2 passing performance.

-------

A day when the NC State defense completely stymied the Fighting Irish, holding them to 113 total yards and just three points ....

59 rushing yards ....

10 first downs ...

and 1 third down conversion.

While the Pack tallied five sacks.

-----

And a day when a special teams play ended up being the difference in the game.

With Notre Dame punting from its own 25, big Pharoah McKever blocked the kick ....

... safety Dexter Wright scooped up the slippery football ...

... and with McKever beside him ...

... took it 16 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

And at the end of this day, a day that ended up being pretty special in spite of the weather ... as Wolfpack players and coaches used Day Family Field as a celebratory Slip-n-Slide ...

Players, coaches and fans alike knew it was a day they would never forget.

A day to remember.
