After completing this presentation, learners will be able to:
- Explain and define the assess process of the assessment cycle.
- Differentiate the difference between assessment and evaluation.
- Evaluate course work to measure goal performance.
Last week we looked at the second step of the assessment cycle -- implement. We used a curriculum mapping template to help align your course goals.
At GU, we often use a third-party software such as Taskstream to help with the assess process. Students submit work into the third party software, instructors evaluate the work, and than the software gives us real-time reports of how course/program outcomes are being met.
Above is an example from an actual outcome report for a class here at GU. This report measures specific rubric criteria for a final paper in this course, breaking down class averages on each component of the rubric while also giving us the final average.
Based on the details above, we can see that the course work appears to be extremely well aligned in this course, as students are meeting the program outcome 1 of this class at a very high rate.
Above is another example from an actual outcome report here at GU. Here we can see many of the scores are not as high as the first example, letting us know there may be room for improvement when it comes to alignment.
We can use this information to ask ourselves: If our students are supposed to be meeting goals, and the assignment we measured has a class average of 81%, why are our students not performing better? When we get to the "revise" stage of the assessment cycle, we can determine what factors lead to effective and ineffective goal performance.
There could be many reasons why students perform well or poorly. Course alignment is not always the culprit. We will delve deeper into the insights gained from assessing in the final unit of this training.
So what is the difference between evaluation and assessment anyway?
