Gender-based Violence A barrier to gender equality

Gender-based violence disproportionately affects girls.

It's estimated that as many as 35% of women have been the victim of physical or sexual abuse.

Gender-based violence exists in many forms.

Forced and child marriage,

intimate partner violence,

female genital mutilation,

'honor' killings,

and human trafficking affect women and girls worldwide.

Ending gender-based violence is not an easy feat.

Challenging long-standing cultural norms about gender can be difficult.

Change can only occur when respected community members and elders are engaged in the fight against violence.

Boys and young men need to be educated and encouraged to be agents of change--to fight for the girls in their communities and prevent violence.

Girls need to be encouraged to speak out and tell their stories. Providing a voice reduces stigma.

Want to read more about strong female survivors, or have a story of your own to tell? Our partners at UN Women host a site to provide girls and women who have been victimized a platform to speak out. Click here to learn more.
