ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL POSITION It gives me great pleasure to announce that Patrick Walsh has been appointed to the vacant Assistant Principal position and will be starting with us at the commencement of Term 4. Patrick is currently the Assistant Principal of Bonbeach Primary School, a school of approximately 320 children. Bonbeach is a south eastern suburb in the vicinity of places such as Carrum and Chelsea. I am sure everyone will make him feel very welcome as he settles in to our school during the last term of 2018.

MATHSLAND The second of our Term 3 transition sessions, Mathsland, is scheduled for next Thursday, August 30 from 9.30am-10.30am.

CYBERSAFETY EVENING We are still taking enrolments for the parent session on Cybersafety to be held at 6.30pm on Thursday, August 30. Please email the school at viewbank.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au with INTENTION TO ATTEND CYBERSAFETY NIGHT in the subject to register your attendance. This will assist with selecting the venue for the night (school library?) and with tea, coffee, biscuit style catering needs. Thank you.

WORKING BEE Many thanks to everyone who attended Saturday’s working bee, which was carefully and cleverly positioned in between the overnight showers of Friday evening and the Arctic blast of Saturday afternoon. We were fortunate to have dry weather to work in, and the contributions of the many volunteer participants, to whom we say a hearty and grateful thanks!

SCHOOL DANCE Tickets go on sale on Try Booking next Monday, August 27 for the three nights of entertainment scheduled for September 17, 18 and 19 at La Trobe University. These tickets are limited to two per family until September 10, after which any remaining tickets will be open and available for purchase. Full details about times, what to bring, ticket costs etc will be published with the invitation to purchase tickets next Monday.

PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY Our four school captains, Remy Giuliani, Bianca Stella, Thomas Vander Pal and Jenna Berryman, spent all day Monday shadowing Gill and myself, as part of widening their leadership experiences at our school. I asked them to write about the day, and their reflections follow!

As captains at Viewbank Primary School, we had the opportunity to swap roles with Mr Kersing and Ms Nicholls so that we could feel what it is like to be the principal for a day. To start our experience, the four of us took turns reading out the parts that Mr Kersing normally would at assembly. This included Citizen of the months, announcements and our school oath. Then, we had a meeting about upcoming events in this week. As reward for our hard work this year Mr Kersing and Ms Nicholls took us out for lunch at Hunter Lane. The food there was delicious and we definitely recommend it. For the rest of the day, we all got a chance to make announcements over the P.A. system and suggest improvements for our school. This experience has been amazing and we all learnt so much about what it is like to be a principal. By Remy, Bianca, Thomas and Jenna.

Have a great week.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS Our Viewbank community had a wonderful day today celebrating Book Week. I have never seen so many fabulous costumes and excited students. Every student I spoke with throughout the day had a story to tell about their costume, their favourite book or what they had learnt at their visiting author session. A huge thank you to our very creative parents and families for supporting this day. Thanks must also go to Meredith Collins for organising and coordinating the special events today and Louise Buissink for promoting Book Week in the library. It was lovely to see everyone having fun and enjoying the parade this morning.

INDIVIDUAL STUDENT LEARNING PLANS The Individual Learning Plan (ILP)is a working document that establishes a set of goals and objectives for an individual student to support and actively engage them in their learning and/or social and emotional development. ILPs, for selected students, will be sent home this week to enable the school and family to work together in supporting your child with their learning and/or social and emotional growth. This plan includes strategies to support your child at home and at school. Your support at home will assist your child to achieve continued success with their education.

PRIMARY SCHOOL NURSING PROGRAM - FOUNDATION If you have a child currently in Foundation please remember to complete your School Entrant Health Questionnaire (SEHQ) and return it to the school by Friday 24th August in order for your child to participate in the Primary School Nursing Program.

Have a great week

Gill Nicholls

CERES COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL PARK Last week the Foundation students went on their very first excursion to CERES Community Environmental Park, as part of their “Communities” Inquiry. The students learned about different cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and Africans. The students were shocked to learn that African children do not have access to water like we do, and even had the opportunity to walk down to the Merri Creek and collect water like they do in Africa. While the students now recognise how privileged we are to have free flowing access to water, they also know how important it is not to waste our precious resources! Here are some handy tips from the students in Foundation:

  1. Don’t leave the water running while you brush your teeth
  2. Take shorter showers
  3. Use the half button to flush when you do a wee

REDUCING, REUSING AND RECYCLING In Year 2 we are learning about reducing, reusing and recycling rubbish. It is important to reduce, reuse and recycle rubbish because our marine life is suffering because of our waste. We (Callum and Lewis) are collecting rubbish not just at school, but outside of school. On Sunday the 19th of August, we went to McDonalds to try and stop the amount of rubbish being littered around McDonalds and 711. Do you want to know what we found in around half an hour? On the ground we picked up 29 straws, 13 coffee and drink cups, 19 plastic lids, 7 plastic bottles and 2 large plastic bags filled with soft plastic packaging. Do you think this is sad? We do! We care about keeping our Earth clean. Instead of using non-reusable things like plastic straws and take away coffee cups, you can use metal straws (or no straws at all) and change to Keep Cups. We would really like your help. Please make a change to help our community and our Earth!
