Telling a Story Presenting information with Adobe Creative Cloud

Communication in the age of distributed mass media

We live in a world of unprecedented change and technological development.

Text, raw data, graphs, still matter...

...But in a world of short attention spans and access to unlimited data, media, distribution and context are critical

The World is now

  • Digital
  • Networked
  • Distributed
  • Interconnected
  • Understood through media

Power of Media

Media and social networks have inverted the broadcast paradigm

Telling Diverse Stories

The old model

A central authority creates and distributes media for the public to consume.

In the new model

Everyone has the power to create and share their story

Democratizing production

Personal computers have replaced impossibly expensive production studios

Pocket studios

Just as media consumption and personal computing are increasingly mobile, so are the tools for creating and publishing

Evaluation of truth

Media consumers need the skills to evaluate sources, analyze glossy media, and think critically about the media they consume.

Sharing meaning

Media and audio / visual narratives add context to the data story. The personal is powerful.

We are all creative

Creative, adj. (from Oxford English Dictionary)

  1. Having the quality of creating, able to create; of or relating to creation; originative.
  2. Inventive, imaginative; of, relating to, displaying, using, or involving imagination or original ideas as well as routine skill or intellect, esp. in literature or art.
But, I'm not artistic! I'm a data scientist.

Digital Literacy is a skill

  • Skills can be learned.
  • Skills require study and practice.
  • Learning by doing, making, doing.
  • You don't have to be Scorsese or Picasso.

Creativity in all of its forms is the currency of the new economy

These tools facilitate creativity and rich communication in media, scholarship, research, and workplaces of all kinds
