Chromotherapy is the usage of colours on the human body that adjust or change body vibrations which aim to improve mental health. Colour has an impactful role for everyone, making it a key component in improving an individual's overall mood and health. Irmak's research looks at the experience of colour from the perspective of young adults between the ages of 18-35.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
The objective of the research was to understand the current relationship young adults have with colour in their daily lives. With the data collected, the information will be coded and analyzed to find patterns that would be used to create ways for young adults to incorporate colour into their lives to help their mental health.
RESEARCH METHOD
Data was collected through in-depth interviews and a survey questionnaire. The interviews took place over the phone and interviewees were asked open ended questions to create a conversation about their experience with colour. The questionnaire was designed to gather an abundance of data to understand what participants knew about colour, what it means to them and how they currently incorporate it into their lives.
QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS
“I love being able to choose the design of my nails, it makes me explore and experiment with colours that I usually wouldn’t. I never really thought about how it could affect my mood though, but now that I think about it, I think I usually choose unique designs because its the main way I can show my creativity. ” - Selena Lazo
ANALYSIS
The interviews conducted revealed several different aspects about colour and the role it has in the lives of the participants. After analyzing the data, it was evident that the interviewees had not thought about colour as a creative outlet, a boost of morale and a way to uplift their emotional well being. However, they both heavily incorporated colour in their lives in different ways such makeup or nail enhancements. Throughout the interviews, participants were encouraged to dig deeper to realize how powerful colour can be.
CONNECTING INTERVIEWS TO SURVEYS
The survey results revealed that most participants believe colour has the ability to affect an individual's mood. This was also evident in the interviews that were conducted. Both interviewees made a comments throughout the interview that implied colour in rooms or clothes are likely to affect how someone feels at that moment.
Through out the interview, both participants were asked to view the same image available in the survey that looks at a room with furniture. The purpose was to discuss what aspects of the room they noticed first. One participant noticed the teal pillow (decor) first while the other participant noticed the colour of the walls first. These results align with the overall consensus of the survey results as both options were the top three choices. Decor and furniture received an equal result making them both second while noticing the wall colour was the top choice.
RECOMMENDATIONS
After careful analysis, the results reveal that the young adults who participated in this study would benefit from incorporating more colour into their lives through small changes. This can be implemented by adding more colour in rooms they often frequent through furniture and decor. Another effective way to add more colour is to incorporate a colour scheme that helps elevate morale through clothes.
