Today, Riot Games and Fortiche Production revealed a first-look clip and new images of its upcoming animated series, Arcane, coming to Netflix in Fall of 2021. It also released a Q&A with Arcane co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee, where they speak directly to players in a League of Legends style /dev diary video about what went into making the show and a little bit on what they can expect to see.
CO-CREATORS OF ARCANE CHRISTIAN LINKE & Alex yee
Christian:
Hey Everyone, Christian Linke here on behalf of the Arcane team. We’re very excited to share a little bit of Arcane with you, and if you haven’t seen the clip yet, check out the link in the description below.
A little bit more about me, I’ve been at Riot for over 10 years now and I’m the co-creator of Arcane. During my time at Riot, I’ve worked on creative development, having worked on our animated shorts, music videos, champions, and so on.
Some of you may know me as one of the musicians behind our metal band, Pentakill, but these days most of my time is spent working as the Showrunner, or Executive Producer, of Arcane, alongside Alex, who is here to introduce himself and give you some context on why we made Arcane.
Alex:
Hey Everyone, I’m Alex Yee, co-creator of Arcane. Similar to Christian, I’ve been at Riot for over 10 years, working on many creative developments working alongside many other passionate Rioters on things like champions, skins, and audio and voiceover.
As you may have seen, Arcane is coming to Netflix this fall globally and on Tencent video in China. We are really excited to give you some insight on what you can expect from the show.
Arcane is our love letter to you, the players and fans who over the years have been with us and helped make League of Legends what it is today. When we set out to make Arcane, we knew we wanted to create something that feels like an authentic representation of your favorite champions. You’ll get to see some of their origin stories, but you’ll also get to see them in the present day as they push the world forward.
CHRISTIAN:
Arcane is set in Piltover and Zaun and will explore the lives of the many champions who live there, including Jinx and Vi, who, as many of you guessed, are, in fact, sisters.
Jinx and Vi are two characters that Alex and I actually worked on during their creation some 10 years ago, and even back then we could tell that they’re really special. They’ve always been fan-favorites, and when we were approaching this idea and had to think about which characters we’d really want to sink our teeth into, it was pretty obvious to us. These two sisters, have this very troubled relationship, and couldn’t be more different from each other. Each one a deadly fighter in their own right, and as all of us who have siblings know… you’re gonna butt heads. In their case, that’ll involve… rocket launchers, grenades that have teeth, and boxing gloves the size of small cars.
CHRISTIAN CONTINUED:
We’ll dive deeply into the stories and relationships, and struggles of all these characters and find out what their lives look like, what made them who they are today -- and for those people who aren’t really familiar with our game we want to show them why we’ve stuck with them for over a decade now and why we love them so much.
We’ve been working very closely with our partner studio, Fortiche in Paris, who were involved in many of our popular videos of the past, videos like “Get Jinxed,” “Rise” and “Pop/Stars,” and they’ve brought their unique style to Arcane, which we promise you it looks gorgeous, and we’re very excited to share more later this year.
The world of Runeterra is so vast, with so many factions and champions that are bustling with life. This is just a small slice, and the start of all the storytelling opportunities we are working on at Riot.
