Black Lemur Helicopter Excursion

Let us take you on an adventure to find one of Madagascar’s most endangered lemurs. Accessed by helicopter from Time + Tide Miavana, we take you to find the rare Black Lemur, with as few as 500 individuals left on Earth. The Black Lemur (or Perrier’s Sifaka) is one of the world’s 25 most endangered primates.

Its last known habitat is a tiny block of forest in the Northern part of Madagascar, in the Antsiranana region where its population density is estimated at only 3 individuals/km².

Lemurs are primitive primates that share common ancestry with monkeys, apes and humans. Earliest fossil evidences of these euprimates have only been found on the Africa Mainland where they are believed to have originated. About 50 million years ago some of these early primates, by misfortune, found themselves rafting across the Mozambique Channel and carried by ocean currents to the then virgin and almost predator-free-island of Madagascar. Natural selection, adaptive radiation and confinement have produced nearly a hundred species of these lemurs confined to Madagascar.
