Algester Primary School was established in 1977 and since then has grown to be a well respected place of learning within the local community. So highly valued that we require an Enrolment Management Plan for us to manage our capacity. Many people from outside our catchment area make enquires and we are only able to fill a portion of that number each year.

School Sport
We have a number of opportunities for our students to be involved in home and interschool sport.
We have dedicated sports programs in the following 4 main sports at our school:
- Netball
- Touch Football
- Rugby League
- AFL
We have partnerships with local high schools for each of these sports so that students who are successful can pursue their sport at their next school.
We host annual Atheltics and Cross Country Carnivals for all students. Eligible students go on to represent the school at District, Regional or State Levels.
We also host an annual colour fun run as a fundraiser and an end of year swimming trials to determine students eligible to represent the school at District level.
We enjoy having parents and caregivers along to our sporting meets to encourage and support their children.
Year 5 & 6 students regularly participate in interschool sport with a number of additional sports to the major sports including:

The school entered three teams in the State All Schools Touch Competition in 2019. Our students performed very well across the weekend with 3 teams making it to the finals on Sunday. The Junior boys made the quarter finals, the Senior girls made the semi-finals and the Senior boys won the Grand Final.
In 2020, our boys' and girls' teams both reached the semi-fianls for the AFL QCup State Titles.
Runcorn State HIgh School hosted a Touch Football Competition in 2020 and Algester State School entered 2 boys and 1 girls team. The Boys No. 1 Team were the champions on the day and our other two teams achieved credible third and fourth places.

Special Education Program
Algester State School has a special education program that supports students who have a verified disability in any of the following categories: ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder; ID – Intellectual Disability; SLI – Speech Language Impairment; HI – Hearing Impairment; VI - Visual Impairment; and PI – Physical Impairment.
This program supports students according to goals set in their IEP’s (Individual Education Plan) and PLP's (Personal Learning Plans). Sometimes, this support will take place on an individual or small group basis, at other times the SEP teachers or teacher aides will support the students within their classrooms.
The school exhibits an inclusive philosophy with programs developed and resources deployed to maximise learning and wellbeing.

School Music
The school has weekly music lessons for all students. They learn the essentials of music including notation, rhythm, beat and instrumentation and participate in singing and accompanying music with percussion instruments.
Our students also use the Garage Band App to create music on their iPads.
Our student have opportunities to become involved in our Instrumental Music Programs.
We have two instrumental music programs:
- Strings (Yr 3 and up)
- Brass & Woodwind (Yr 4 and up)
Instruments can be borrowed for the first year of instruction but there is an expectation that students will purchase their own instrument after that. There is a hire fee for the loan of school instruments and a program fee for the purchase of copyrighted music for the children to use.
Tuition, however, is free. This is a privilege that most students in private school have to pay significantly extra for.

Student Leadership Program
The aim of the school leadership program is to provide skills and opportunities for students to become leaders within the school and fill the senior school leadership positions.
Students wear their Leadership Badges with honour and pride.
Students in Year 5 are encouraged to explore their interests and nominate to become a school leader. They work through a leadership card and achieve adult ratification prior to being accepted. They are then able to nominate for school leadership positions. All students in Year 6 receive training in leadership and elected student leaders fulfil their roles leading school events, assemblies and presentations.
School Facilities
The school has well appointed facilities within a tree lined environment and is adjacent to Sheepstation Gully and associated parkland. A koala habitat is adjacent to the school.
Algester State School is a lovely community for your children.
The school has 40 classrooms and is currently at capacity. We have a range of styles but they are all spacious and well equipped. Many of our blocks are currently undergoing refurbishment.
The school has a dedicated small performing Arts centre adjacent to the Library. It is called the Algester Music & Arts Centre and it is known as the AMAC. It has dedicated lighting and audio visual equipment.
The school has three ovals for children to play in during lunch breaks. These include such facilities as:

The school Tuckshop offers great healthy food and is open every day.
We also encourage our children to bring food to school for their lunches with minimal packaging to help save the environment.
All of the classrooms of the school are fully air conditioned. Our students have the privilege of having uninterrupted learning during the excessive heat of summer or the chillingly cool wintry days.
The school has a dedicated Science Centre where we regularly conduct science investigations. It is called the Sheepstation Gully Science Centre and is adjacent to the school and is shared with St Stephens Catholic School. This is a joint initiative between the two schools and their respective Education Departments.
We have indoor and outdoor learning spaces for our students. Students love to go outside for their filming and project work to enjoy the sunshine and beautiful environment.
The school has a large performance hall with a fully appointed raised stage with permanent stage lighting and professional audio sound equipment. There are two large display screens so everyone can view the presentations.
Digital Technologies
Algester State School has been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School for 2019–2022 for its work in digital pedagogies. Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching, and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment.
There are only around 10 Apple Distinguished Schools in Queensland and 50 across Australia and New Zealand. We are part of this Apple Distinguished School community of around 400 schools worldwide and regularly contribute to international and national forums. One of our teachers is part of the leadership team of the Australian ADS Alliance. We are well placed to learn from the most innovative schools across the world. We also host regular visits from other schools to share our practice.
Algester Primary School is a Shared iPad School. This means that we use iPads for learning in every classroom in a combination of Bring Your Own Devices (around 85%) and shared devices provided by the school by students (around 15%). There is an expectation that all students enrolling will provide a device and the school will provide devices for students to share when this cannot occur. It is our experience that the best learning occurs for personally owned devices and not shared devices.
Our students use their iPads as tools for their learning in a variety of ways:
- Drill Activities like learning Maths Facts, letters and numbers.
- Creating content like documents and presentations
- Annotating their learning with voice overs and mark ups.
- Researching online information.
- Collaboration with others in shared tasks.
- Engaging in online and school developed quizzes.
- Publishing their work in multimodal ways.
- Sharing their work with classmates and their parents.
- Creating code for robots and programming.
- Note taking and organisation of learning tasks.
- Documentation and storage of learning tasks.
One of the benefits of mobile devices is that they enable learning anywhere, anytime. This allows a shift away from the industrial era model of education where the classroom was the central place of learning driven by the teacher and limited to instruction within the school day. In deploying mobile devices, the teacher is no longer at the centre of the learning process and the instructional time can transcend the school day. (Goodwin, 2012). Algester has witnessed a surge in the learning undertaken at home by students in iPad classes. A discourse founded in the United States Of America, entitled ‘Flipped Learning’ explores the use of mobile devices for undertaking home tasks for learning and school time becomes a reflection of this work and engagement in higher ordering thinking tasks. Many of our classes using iPads are exploring the ‘Flipped Learning’ space.
Setting up the devices to use at school is simple and we provide online and face to face support for parents. We have strict usage agreement forms, security procedures and cybersafety lessons to support our children.
Students love using iPads to support their learning and find them very motivating and engaging.
iPads are a tool to support learning and used consistently throughout the school day. However, they are not used exclusively, and the school still undertakes regular hands on and pencil and paper tasks like other schools. Handwritten work is still important to us and your children will learn all of the skills they need for learning.
Another benefit of iPads is that they promote collaborative learning. (Diemer et al., 2012) Collaborative learning helps students develop skills that have a long term benefit and are a feature of 21st Century classrooms as they prepare students for workplaces that involve teamwork, negotiation and collaboration. Studies observing student behaviours indicate that students using iPads are more in sync with their peers than students not using iPads. The iPad-equipped students worked at the same pace as one another and shared their screens to help one another solve tough problems. (Diemer et al., 2012). This can be easily observed in the classes that use iPads at Algester where students readily work together to solve problems, share their work and ideate new concepts together.
A substantial feature of iPads is the ability of teachers to tailor the learning tasks to suit the student. This ability to differentiate for students and cater for individual learning needs and preferences makes the devices truly personal. Many of the instructional Apps track student levels. The open ended Apps like ‘Book Creator’ allow children of all levels to express themselves at their own level. The predictive text function supports students to learn spelling and the choices involved in all of the Apps to scaffold and compensate for students’ emerging skills give a strong sense of student ownership of learning.
Using iPads changes the way teachers teach and students learn. Schools report that academic performance is improving with iPad use. (Apple, 2016) Five years after implementing their one to one iPad program, Montlieu Academy of Technology, North Carolina, reported growth in test scores in all core subjects. They improved their academic achievement by 44.9% in reading and over 55% in maths and science. All classrooms at Valencia Park Elementary School, California have implemented a one to one iPad learning program and they have been recognised as one of the top performers in their state. Students gained a reading fluency rate by 4.6 words per minute in Year 2.
At Algester Primary School, our NAPLAN results for 2017 - 2021 reflect an increasing number of our students achieving in the upper two bands for literacy and numeracy since the introduction of iPad classes across our entire school.
Our society is changing quickly. Technology is at the forefront of change within workplaces as it permeates all spheres of employment. Automation, robotics, coding, drones etc are all impacting on future work options for students. The age of personal devices is amongst us with most adults using a mobile smart phone for work and play. Education needs to adapt to this changing world. The use if iPads for learning is a great way for us to prepare our students for this future.
We learn about making and programming robots at the school from Prep to Year 6 using Lego Robotics, Jimu Robots and other coding devices. Check out some of our robots below:
Online Learning @ Algester
Covid related lockdowns have caused the school to pivot into online learning at home very quickly. We are able to do this very successfully because our students have devices that their teachers can deliver online learning to in an authentic and efficacious way. Online learning uses the SeeSaw Platform which enables teachers to share work to and from students working from home. Our senior classes are also extending their at home work to include Microsoft Teams where classes can meet together with their teacher in real time.
Parents & Citizens' Association
We at Algester Primary School are very fortunate to have a strong and friendly P&C association. It’s easy to be involved all you need to do is join us at our friendly and relaxed P&C meetings. The P&C meet on the third Tuesday of each month in the Staffroom at 6:00pm. General school improvement and matters of educational interest are discussed at these meetings. New parents are warmly welcomed to the meetings and we are always ready to listen to fresh ideas, which can only benefit and enhance this fantastic school.
Before & After School Care
The school has an external provider located on the school grounds that provides a before and after school care service from 6 a.m. in the morning until school commences and after school until 6 p.m. There are fees associated with this service and you should contact the Director to make arrangements for your child/ren. Due to their age, the service provides a drop off and pick up service for Prep children. Numbers are limited so you should arrange your requirements as soon as possible. There are also other nearby services that you also might like to consider.
School Security
Algester State School is secured with a tall security fence on its boundary. Gates are locked from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day to ensure the safety of our school community. Entry is only via a locked gate adjacent to the office where credentials are checked before entry. This fence gives the school community peace of mind and a strong sense of safety throughout the school day.

Environmental Club: A small, but vibrant group of students advocate for better care of our environment and they regularly address school assemblies educating their peers. They also award classes for tidy environment awards.
Student Council: Students from classes throughout the school make up this important study body responsible for providing the school administration with feedback and ideas for school improvement. This group is currently working on providing cool drinking fountains throughout the school with their fundraising activities. They also raise funds for other organisations through their advocacy of special days like Crazy Hair Day and

Our Student Code of Conduct outlines our system for facilitating positive behaviours and responding to inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours. Through our school plan, shared expectations for student behaviour are plain to everyone, assisting Algester State School to create and maintain a positive and productive learning and teaching environment, where ALL school community members have clear and consistent expectations and understandings of their role in the educational process. Our school rules have been agreed upon and endorsed by all staff and our school P&C. They are aligned with the values, principles and expected standards outlined in Education Queensland’s Student Discipline Procedure.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Algester State School uses Positive Behaviour for Learning as the multi-tiered system of support for discipline in the school. Positive Behaviour for Learning is a whole-school framework which promotes positive behaviour across a school and helps schools to develop a safe and supportive learning environment. In a whole-school approach, all members of the school community work together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.
When schools adopt the PBL framework all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours and clear and consistent boundaries are established. Schools take a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school. Student outcomes are monitored so that identified students can receive additional support when needed, and a minority of students can access intensive support to enable them to engage successfully at school.
There are a number of components to PBL including setting high expectations for behaviour, actively teaching behaviour and acknowledging and rewarding good behaviour.
School Values & Rules: The school has a set of values and rules around respect which are published widely in classrooms and walls throughout the school. The rule of the week is set within the context of a school value and a school rule each week.
Keys to Success: The school teaches the 5 components of the You Can Do It Program as a way of developing positive habits of the mind. It supplements this with activities around Positive Growth Mindset.
Rule of the Week: The school uses data to inform its development of a Rule of the Week. There is a lesson for students each week, they are reminded of the rule at the School Assembly and parents are informed of the rule each week in our communication App, School Stream.
Success Key Cards: Success Key Cards are awarded to students to acknowledge their good behaviour. A verbal acknowledgement of the particular behaviour being rewarded is made at the time of the presentation of the reward. Success Key Cards may be awarded by all adults in the school. One Success Key Card is distributed per incident. However, there is no limit to the number of students that may be acknowledged at once for that incident, or the number of incidents that can be acknowledged.
On special days double points are awarded. These are advertised in advance. Students place their Success Key Cards in a receptacle in the classroom designed by the classroom teacher known as a Rewards Chart. These are collected and collated at the end of the week before being reused. Success Key Cards awarded by specialist teachers, visiting teachers, teacher aides or administration staff are also placed in the classroom rewards chart. Student award tallies are used to calculate Certificates of Achievement and special awards automatically.
Award Certificates: The school has a number of award certificates to value and acknowledge the good behaviour of students: Eg. Academic Awards, Sporting Awards, etc.
Class Award: A student award nominated by the classroom teacher once a week at the school assembly.
Principal’s Afternoon Tea Award: A student award for being a good role model nominated by the classroom teacher once a month.
Participation Certificates: Awards for students for participation in extra-curriculum activities and achievements.
PBL Certificates: Awards for students that are automatically received at predetermined levels based on the number of Success Key Cards they have gained. Eg. 300 Points for the Silver Award
PBL Awards: Points gained by students for their Success Key Cards can be traded for tangible items from the Rewards Shop. Eg. A novelty sharpener for 60 Points.
PBL Vouchers: Points can also be redeemed by students at the Rewards Shop for vouchers. Eg. 300 Points to sit at Assembly on a deck chair.
Rewards Shop:
Students may purchase tangible rewards with their points from the Rewards Shop. A tally of students’ points is published and emailed to teachers each fortnight for children to peruse. The Rewards Shop is in the centre room of D Block and accessible from the rear of the block through a sliding door. Year levels are allocated one lunch session a week for students to access the shop with Thursday being a catch up day for any year level.
Rewards ranging in value are available from the shop and students are encouraged to save for more expensive items. The Rewards Shop is very popular with our students.
Staff members speak positively of the impact of implementing a positive approach to student behaviour. The three school behaviour expectations of ‘Respect for self, Respect for others and Respect for place’ are known and understood by students, staff and most parents. These expectations are visible throughout the school and contribute to the climate of high expectations and a supportive environment.

Arts Show
Every couple of years the school holds an Arts Evening where we highlight the achievements of our students in the visual and creative arts. Displays are hosted in every classroom for each of the classes in the school and include a huge array of colours, textures and designs. Cleverly pinned to makeshift gallery walls, fishing nets and pinboards, the dazzling displays are a delight to view.
The students take much pride and joy in talking about their art work with their parents and other visitors to their classroom throughout the evening.
The school also has special arts enhancement groups that focus on particular art forms throughout the year. Students are nominated by their teacher and then form part of a year level cohort of art enhancement students that meet for one or two days to work on Art.
These groups take place from Years 2 to 6. Their results take pride of place on the Arts Evening in the special gallery in the Hall.
These displays are quite special and showcase the tremendous artistic talent of our students.
ART AUCTION
Perhaps the most exciting feature of the Arts Evening is the special art auction held in the Hall throughout the event. Each class prepares a canvas where all of the students have participated and then places it on an easel in the Hall ready for viewing.
Throughout the evening, enthusiastic bidders place their written bids against the canvases, with the highest bidder on the night taking home the prize! In 2021, the Art Auction raised $5000 for Art equipment for the school, a spectacular result!
Generous Supporters
The school has a number of generous supporters who support the Arts Program for which we are tremendously grateful.
The community recognises this event as special and unique. Many community leaders attend a special pre-launch of the evening to view the art and make initial bids on the auction items.
Art is a medium much valued and appreciated by the community of Algester.
Drama Enhancement Classes
The school also hosts enhancement classes in the dramatic arts from Yrs 3-6. Student learn about strategies for dramatic expression by trained drama teachers and record their performances on video.
The school hosts a concert every other year which gives opportunities for these students to perform to larger audiences.
These concerts are always enjoyed by the community.
Special Days
Algester State School also likes to have fun. And we do that by celebrating a number of days in the year where children can dress up, sometimes for a cause, and others just because dressing up is great fun!
International Talk Like A Pirate Day
Nothing is fiercer than a shipload of pirates threatening their swords and hooks to disturb the tranquility of school! An annual event around the 19 Sep, this thrilling day invites all sorts of mayhem and frivolity from treasure hunts and pirate adventures, to walking the plank and pirate attacks. Marauding pirates sometimes even attack the principal’s office (usually designated captain for the day) looking for stolen treasure from their classrooms!
There is a special parade for the Junior School in the morning full of pirate jokes, learning how to speak Pirate, Pirate songs and more. The children love it!
The whole school is invited to dress up on the day and even the teachers join in.
Book week Dress Up Day
This day is popular amongst the bookworms of the school. Children across the school have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character on the day.
Just about every character you can imagine finds their way to school for the day and the children have a lot of fun.
Year 4 Convict Day
In their Australian historical studies, this day allows the children to dress up as any historical character of the period. From early settlers, to soldiers, convicts and indigenous Australians, the children love to come along dressed in the period and celebrate activities throughout the day.
One of their favourites is to see the cat of nine tales in operation! A teacher usually gets to whipped for some misdemeanour on the day!
Crazy Hair Day
A fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation, this day certainly brings out the crazy in hair style!
The students love to create all sorts of colourful and unique designs to attract attention on the day.
Student Council Dress Up Days
Also to raise funds, the Student Council periodically hosts themed dress up days for the students.
Some popular days have been to dress up in their team colours, state of origin colours or their brightest colours.
Freedom to express themselves away from the shackles of the school uniform are welcome events for the students.
Dress Up Days are a lot of fun! And fun is also part of schooling at Algester State School.
Communication
We strive to keep our community well informed of school news and events. We utilise an App called School Stream where we post lots of information about our school on an almost daily basis. This includes news, class excursions and incursions, events and a calendar. Users are approved before access so it is much more secure than other online platforms. It also only has limited two way communication with no comments or likes feature so there is no danger of inappropriate posts offending others. We know that social media platforms are popular with other schools but we choose the safety and security of an App especially designed for schools. You will find the App easy to use and it features content organisation that can be tailored to your liking rather than just chronological posts that are lost after a very short time in social media Apps. School Stream also has a push notifications feature which we use occasionally to alert you of emergent situations or special events.
SeeSaw
This is the other App that classroom teachers use to keep families informed and to post students’ work. This is a highly successful App and a great way to take an interest in your child’s learning. It is quite incredible to see parents logging in to their child’s SeeSaw class throughout the day and posting encouraging comments and likes. This App is also closed and by invitation only. All posts are approved by the classroom teacher before posting so once again it is safe and secure.
