a Letter from the co-cos

As our team reflected on 2020, Hạ Trần, Third Wave’s Program Associate framed it so well. They said, “We got through last year, but not unscathed. The global impacts of this moment will be felt for generations to come — years like 2020 are the beginnings of collective generational trauma.”

Those words have stuck with us. We keep ourselves and each other safe, but we do so in the absence of adequate healthcare, housing, bodily autonomy, and safety nets — and in the presence of oppressive systems like policing, militarism, prisons, and detention centers.

We’re in awe of all the mutual aid organizing, Black liberation mobilizing, and everything in between that youth-led movements risked their lives to do amidst a pandemic. And we’re so grateful for the dollars our supporters committed to fund their work. But we’re also grieving the loss of far too many loved ones and community members. We are honored to have moved more resources than ever before, but we were pushed thin in a moment of collective mourning, trauma, anger, and fear.

We can hold these struggles and contradictions, and still be here to take care of each other and do the work that needs to be done to resource gender justice movements.

If we can say anything about 2020, it’s that last year held Third Wave Fund to our word of being flexible and adaptable to meet the emerging needs of movements and critical long-term support of our people. Our grantees showed up for each other, and our supporters like you gave us the means to show up for our grantees — because we got us. But the crises of our times are far from over, and we need to continue to show up for each other, take care of each other, and keep each other safe — because our lives depend on it.

We’re so honored to be in the fight for youth-led gender justice and liberation alongside you. Thank you to our Mobilize Power Fund, Own Our Power Fund, Grow Power Fund, Sex Worker Giving Circle, and Conflict Resolution Fund grantees for continuing to show us the path to liberation. Thank you to our Sex Worker Giving Circle Advisors, Fellows, Mobilize Power Fund Grantmaking Panel, and our Advisory Council members for supporting us in staying on that path. Thank you to our staff who continue to do the work and support each other. And thank you to all of our donors, funders, supporters, and amplifiers for sticking with Third Wave Fund in 2020, and for believing in our mission of resourcing youth and BIPOC-led, intersectional gender justice activism.

We wholeheartedly couldn’t have done it without you. We love and care for each of you — this community gives us the strength to carry on.

Wage love,

The Co-Cos, Kiyomi Fujikawa & Ana Conner

2020: THIRD WAVE HIGHLIGHTS

We moved over two million dollars in grantmaking during a global pandemic and uprisings for Black lives. From our travel to event budgets, we reallocated every spare dollar and fundraised hard so that we could significantly increase our grantmaking during the pandemic and uprisings. For the first time ever, we moved $2,070,000 to our movements, almost doubling our grantmaking in 2019.

We increased our rapid-response dollars to frontline movements. Through the Mobilize Power Fund, our monthly rapid-response grantmaking, we increased our budget from $375,000 to $893,000, knowing that movements would need quick money in crisis response mode. We moved those dollars to 86 groups across the country.

We increased our long-term dollars to sustain movements for the long haul. In addition to making out grant checks sooner than later in the year, each of our current Grow Power Fund grantees received an additional $10,000 to support their long-term leadership and general operations as the economic recession broadens across our communities.

Sex workers remain at the forefront of our movements. We moved over $400,000 to Sex Worker Giving Circle (SWGC) grantees, which ranged from supporting folks in overturning local anti-sex worker laws, to creating COVID-19 risk reduction materials, to resourcing jail support efforts for sex workers behind bars.

Strategic planning for 2021 and beyond is officially in the works. For the first time since our near-closure and relaunch in 2014, we participated in a strategic planning process. It’s still in the works, but the main lesson we took away from our grantees, supporters, and community was to keep doing what we’ve been doing and to hold strong to our values. More information to come this year!

Our culture of care work set us up for sustainability. In many ways, we were best positioned to respond to the pandemic because we already had in place many of the adjustments that other organizations had to set up once the pandemic hit. Our work culture continued to value remote positions, flexible work hours, and creating spacious work plans that held room for sickness and the need to care for our friends and loved ones.

We brought on new staff to meet our growing capacity needs. We had the great opportunity of hiring Christian Giraldo as Sex Worker Funding Associate, Hạ Trần as Administrative Assistant (and now Program Associate), and Solange Azor as Donor Organizing Associate, providing much-needed support to our overall capacity and all the more joy to our team!

Community threw down for the long haul. Over 3,000 of you threw down for youth-led grassroots organizing by giving to Third Wave in 2020, and more than 150 of you answered the call to sustain movements by becoming monthly or recurring sustainers, bringing our total monthly donors count to well over 400 people.

Thank you for showing up for our collective futures!

Rapid-Response Funding

Through the Mobilize Power Fund in 2020, we awarded $893,000 to 86 groups, a 133.35% increase in grant dollars from 2019!

Almost 49% of MPF grantees were first-time recipients, and 85% of MPF grants were related to mutual aid and COVID-19 relief efforts.

We launched the Mobilize Power Fund in 2015 as a rapid-response fund that supports the leadership of young queer, trans, intersex, and gender non-conforming people of color under 35 in social justice movements in moments of urgent direct action, community mobilizing, and healing justice. We believe powerful movements need the ability to respond to and heal from immediate threats with flexible and responsive funding opportunities.

When our communities first felt the impact of the pandemic in 2020, we received ten times the amount of rapid response funding requests than any previous year. We knew we’d have to do everything we could, and showed up with care - increasing our rapid response funding, partnering with other foundations to double down on our commitment to trans communities, and continuing our long-term funding without interruption. Many of you showed up to match that energy, bringing in new dollars at a pace that allowed us to grant out almost over 140% of what we’d budgeted for our monthly rapid response grant, Mobilize Power Fund, in 2020.

Capacity Building Funding

In 2020 through the Own Our Power Fund, we awarded $185,000 through 10 grants.

The Own Our Power Fund makes one and two-year capacity-building grants of up to $25,000 for projects that seek to increase the agency communities have over their organizations by supporting leadership, sustainability, and self-representation.

The fund supports communities most impacted to lead the work, aiding in developing sustainable revenue models and fundraising strategies, and harnessing the power of self-representation through community-led research, storytelling or communications.

Own Our Power Fund 2020 Highlights:

  • Intersex Justice Project’s successful win to #EndIntersexSurgery at Chicago’s Lurie Children’s Hospital
  • Mirror Memoirs’ storytelling to end child sexual abuse outside of carceral systems
  • Sistafire’s mobilization against Black mortality in pregnancy & birthing in Providence, RI, and for all the ways that they’re also strengthening their infrastructure and building leadership pipelines while envisioning their futures
  • Trans United and Yellowhammer Fund’s leadership transitions and all of the training, coaching, and professional development for their organizations’ sustainability and growth that goes with them
  • API Equality Northern California (APIENC)’s participatory action research that provided rich data on Bay Area trans and gender non-conforming Asian and Pacific Islander people, deepening youth and intergenerational leadership. Their report calls attention to the need for affordable housing, affirming workplaces, accessible healing, and community-centered, police-free solutions to violence (full report is here)

Long-Term Funding

In our 4th year of our inaugural Grow Power Fund grantee cohort, we have awarded $405,000 to 9 groups.

The Grow Power Fund is a long-term investment in emerging organizations led by young women of color; trans, gender non-conforming, queer, and intersex youth; and low-income communities.

The fund offers each grantee holistic support by providing a multi-year (6 year) grant inclusive of general operating funds, capacity-building funds, and funds for organizational development coaching.

Sex Worker-Led Funding

The Sex Worker Giving Circle (SWGC) awarded $400,000 in grants to 4 new and 21 returning grantees in 2020.

The SWGC is a cross-class, multi-racial, intergenerational giving circle made up of a group of Fellows with current or past experience with sex work or the sex trade. The Fellows make all high-level funding decisions and grantmaking recommendations, and lead many of our fundraising activities.

In 2018, the SWGC awarded $200,000 to eleven organizations across the United States, and in 2019, we made $200,000 in renewal grants to ten 2018 grantees. We also awarded our first two-year grants, with a total of $400,000 committed to thirteen new grantees over 2019-2020. In both 2018 and 2019, the Fellows reviewed proposals gathered in an open application process.

In 2020, because of the impacts of COVID-19 on the capacity of our grantees, Fellows, and Third Wave staff, we pivoted to a closed application process. We invited previous grantees to reapply for funding, and recruited several new applications from a pool of nominations gathered from across the networks of SWGC Advisors, Fellows, grantees, and movement activists.

NEW: Conflict Resolution Fund

In 2020 through our new Conflict Resolution Fund, we awarded $100,000 across six groups.

The Conflict Resolution Fund is a new fund that supports communities, organizations, and movements led by young BIPOC cis and trans women, and queer, trans, and gender non conforming people to navigate conflict and harm in ways that decrease the power of carceral and state systems. This fund specifically aims to resource Black people, trans people, sex workers, and youth who are on the frontlines and at the forefront of both visioning and practicing transformative justice, restorative justice, and community accountability.

grantee reflections

Colectivo intercultural transgrediendo

Queens, NY; Mobilize Power Fund & Sex Worker Giving Circle Grantee

Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo (“TRANSgressive Intercultural Collective”, or CITG) is a social justice organization run by and for trans Latina women and other Latinx people with diverse gender identities based in Queens, NY. They build the power and well-being of their community through popular education, peer support, and organizing against dangerous legislation and policing practices.

When CITG lost their leader Lorena Borjas to COVID-19 in the spring of 2020, the SWGC joined with them to mourn the loss of an elder and pillar for the community, and we kept supporting their life-saving mutual aid work. CITG continues to build collective power under the leadership of Liaam Winslet, Lorena’s protégé and a former SWGC Fellow.

At our donor briefing on COVID-19 and sex worker organizing, Liaam shared,

“We founded CITG to rise up and to tell everyone that we are not going to allow for our rights to be erased, for us to be invisibilized, stigmatized and cast aside just because we are trans Latinx sex workers. We’re doing everything we can now to help hundreds of community members in Jackson Heights have food to eat, a place to sleep, and get the support they deserve.”

Survived and punished

National; Conflict Resolution Fund Grantee

Survived and Punished is a national organization that believes in and works towards the abolition of prisons, detention centers, all forms of law enforcement, and punitive prosecution, all rooted in systems of violence. Their work specifically focuses on criminalized survivors to raise awareness about the integrated relationship between systems of punishment and the pervasiveness of gender violence.

Emily Suh of Survived and Punished shared the following words on the critical need for responsive funding:

"It’s great to have access to as many funds as we can to be effective but the flexibility is especially helpful. This funding allowed us to be flexible in moments of great crisis. It’s hard to develop these types of relationships over time, so we appreciate that [Third Wave Fund] has trust in our work. That kind of basis for a funder, or a relationship with a funder, when it’s not based on paternalism and you believe in the work you’re funding - it sets up their relationship to be more successful.”

Financials

In 2020 we saw a global recession, and consequently many major funders pulled back and shrank their giving. We ran multiple multi-year scenarios to try to figure out how we could continue to get movements the resources they need, while also having major questions about fundraising during a recession. Fortunately, we were inspired by how many individuals and institutions came together to meet the moment. We witnessed people giving in bold, movement-aligned ways, and institutions making grants quickly, with deeper trust, and less strings attached.

Our 2020 expenses ended up at just over $3.83m, compared to $3.36m in 2019. We made $2.07m in grants, sponsorships, and capacity building, which is an all time record for Third Wave, up from $1.38m in 2019. By the end of the year, we raised $5.8m! The bulk of that income was raised in the last months of the year. We look forward to spending the money we raised at the end of 2020 on grantmaking in 2021! In addition to the money we raised this year, we wanted to share more about the overall financial health of the organization.

Savings, Endowments, and Reserve

6-month reserve: Proteus Fund’s best practice is for all fiscally sponsored projects to maintain a reserve of 6-months expenses (not including grantmaking). For Third Wave, we presently have just under $650,000 as a dedicated 6-month reserve.

Endowments and Investments: DataCenter Endowment: The DataCenter - an incredible movement-building research organization that coined the term Participatory Action Research - closed in 2016 and donated their assets (about $458,000 at time of closure) to Third Wave with the agreement we would use 5% of the restricted endowment to make grants towards Participatory Action Research projects. These are usually made through our Own Our Power Fund or Mobilize Power Fund.

Lela Breitbart Memorial: At time of the closure of Third Wave Foundation in 2014, we had an endowed fund called the Lela Breitbart Memorial fund, a fund which a donor generously set up when her daughter, an ardent young feminist activist who worked at Planned Parenthood, unexpectedly and tragically passed away.

Total Investments: With the Lela Breitbart Memorial Fund, DataCenter, and other funds, we have $1.248m invested in a LGBTQ-owned social responsible fund.

Liabilities: We value multi-year funding across many of our funds. As a result, we currently are liable for $830,000 in multi-year grant commitments. We include this amount in our savings.

Net Assets

As of our unaudited December 2020 financials, we have $5.34m in unrestricted net assets, and $1.77m in restricted net assets (these restricted assets are mostly multi-year grant commitments awarded to us, but will not be released until 2021 or 2022).

Values-based Budgeting Process for 2020

With a staff and advisory council made up of mostly young queer and trans people of color with mixed class backgrounds, we know that many of us are not trusted or taught to navigate money matters. In the interest of building stronger financial skills across our team, we took inspiration from our friends at A Bookkeeping Cooperative (ABC) and AORTA to continue the participatory, values-based budgeting process we began in 2019. After members of staff and advisors attended a workshop with ABC and AORTA, we collaboratively set “success statements” for our budget - knowing that budgets reflect values as much as they do how much is in the bank. From these success statements, we developed a budget that has input and buy-in from everyone on our team. We hope to continue this practice in the future and continue our learning and practice.

Success Statements Summary

In 2021, we know we will be successful if we support boundaries, mutual care, consent, and disability justice internally and externally. We will focus on organizational development, including staff and Advisory Council political education. We will continue to meet the urgency of the moment with our dollars, while also being financially sustainable so we can be prepared to support movements in the future. And we will continue to prioritize rapid response and long term grantmaking as key strategies for resourcing organizing and movement building.

Image Description: An illustration of a facade of an apartment building with multiple windows of people taking part in various acts of physically-distant solidarity: elderly couple facetiming with loved one, masked parent and child hanging a banner out window that stretches across the other windows, a bottom row of windows where a person in a wheelchair is holding groceries, another person holding their laptop and on phone, and another person making artwork. One person is throwing blue and teal confetti out their window onto a crowd of people marching across the illustration with protest posters and signs about keeping each other safe. The banner reads "How We Show Up Now Shapes Our Futures.”
