Highlighted Funding Opportunities

  • National Institutes of Health Exposures and Health Outcomes as a Consequence of Hurricanes Florence and Michael, Deadline Varies: The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development is interested in accepting competitive revisions to existing NIH grants related to exposures and health outcomes as a consequence of Hurricanes Florence and Michael. Applications should be submitted to PA-18-935 “Urgent Competitive Revision to Existing NIH Grants and Cooperative Agreements (Urgent Supplement – Clinical Trial Optional).” The NICHD is also accepting applications to "Administrative Supplements to Existing NIH Grants and Cooperative Agreements (Parent Admin Supp Clinical Trial Optional)” FOA (see NOT-HD-18-029) to support research related to Hurricanes Florence and Michael. The use of the mechanisms described should carefully be considered in the context of the support needed to meet the goals of a research question. Researchers are encouraged to contact their program officer for guidance.
  • Gates Foundation Grand Challenges, Nov. 13 and 30: The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation is inviting grant proposals for its Grand Challenges initiatives. Voices for Economic Opportunity seeks to elevate new and diverse voices that can help broaden the conversation about the issues underlying economic mobility in the United States and generate deeper awareness and actionable understanding. • National Institutes of Health The Intersection of Sex and Gender Influences on Health and Disease, Nov. 25: The NIH is accepting applications on the influence and intersection of sex and gender in health and disease including research applications that examine sex and gender factors and their intersection in understanding health and disease and research that addresses one of the five objectives from Strategic Goal 1 of the new 2019-23 Trans-NIH Strategic Plan for Women's Health Research "Advancing Science for the Health of Women."
  • National Science Foundation STEM Education, Dec. 4 and Feb. 4: The Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Education and Human Resources is a core NSF STEM education program that seeks to promote novel, creative and transformative approaches to generating and using new knowledge about STEM teaching and learning to improve STEM education for undergraduate students. In pursuit of this goal, IUSE: EHR supports projects that seek to bring recent advances in STEM knowledge into undergraduate education, that adapt, improve and incorporate evidence-based practices into STEM teaching and learning, and that lay the groundwork for institutional improvement in STEM education. In addition to innovative work at the frontier of STEM education, this program also encourages replication of research studies at different types of institutions and with different student bodies to produce deeper knowledge about the effectiveness and transferability of findings.
  • North Carolina Biotechnology Center Flash Grants, Dec. 11 (Noon): The North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s Flash Grant program aims to identify and energize the most creative ideas that exhibit early indications of commercial potential. Like a flash of inspiration, Flash Grants infuse funding at a critical early point when a small, targeted influx of funds can be crucial to shaping innovative research ideas into high potential life science technologies, particularly in emerging and converging life science sectors.

What's Coming Up?

eTRACS is Coming: In November, ECU will move to a new tool for sponsored program proposal development, routing, and submission – eTRACS! The new system will include many features designed to streamline the process of creating and submitting proposals:

  • Profiles: Populated from Banner to autofill proposal fields.
  • Direct Submission to Grants.gov: For Federal proposals, eTRACS creates the submission document and delivers it to Grants.gov.
  • Online Budget Creation: No more external spreadsheets and eTRACS already has salary, position, and contact info for your project personnel.

Attend an orientation session and check out the rest of the changes coming with eTRACS.

Office of Faculty Excellence: The Office of Faculty Excellence offers sessions on various research platforms, including NVivo, Tableau, Qualtrics, SPSS, and others. Sign up for workshops through the OFE Calendar.
