How would teenagers view themselves without social media? Social media has been introduced to most young kids and teenagers in this generation, and is plus a big part in their everyday life. Teens use social media for entertainment and for a way to connect to the world through just a few taps and clicks on their device. Social media has had a huge influence on teens that has affected them in multiple ways.
The influence of social media has had a great impact on teens. Sources like the news claim that teens go on social media such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Youtube and Messaging for at least 9 hours a day. It has affected teens in both a positive and negative way. It has come to the point where people have become more insecure about their self-esteem because of it; for example they are concerned about others opinions, how many likes/followers they can get, etc. Also, the amount of time teenagers use social media in an average day can affect their school work by being distracting. As a result from all these conflicts, teenagers can develop depression, stress and anxiety from their insecurities and distract teens from their school work. However, social media has its perks. It can affect teens careers if they become “Internet Famous” and is a convenient, general way to connect with family and friends. Using social media can influence teens, but it also has negative effects.
Why do teenagers use social media? Most teens use it for enjoyment, a way to message and to stay close with their friends, something to do when they’re bored and to share posts about their own self, adventure or entertainment. Having asked 15 teenagers “If you were to go 1 week without any social media, do you think you could do it?” out of 20 teens, 15 said no they couldn’t, and 5 said they could. This shows that teens are basically addicted to going on their device to use any sort of social media and they admit that attempting to not use it wouldn’t be successful. Social media is considered a necessity for most teens in their everyday life.
Social media has had a huge influence on teenagers lives. Most teenagers in this generation have grown up using any sort of social media for a way to associate with the world, friends and family. Social media like texting or snapchatting can affect relationships because sometimes people rely on messaging to be in contact instead of having face to face communications. Following or being “friends” with someone on Instagram or Facebook in this generation feels like you know them. For example, if you were being introduced to someone that you know through social media you would think to yourself,“I’ve never met you, but I have seen your profile on Instagram so I basically know a lot about you.” This is an unhealthy mindset because it holds us back from really forming connections with people in real life and shows that social media is slowly taking as a new reality. Social media has changed the perspective of teenagers view on life.
Social media has had a huge influence on teens that can affect them in multiple ways. Teenagers view themselves differently because "they’re constantly exposed to seeing this “perfect image” of who they should be, provided by social media". Without it, teens might know how to socially connect better with the world without a screen in their hand. Also, teens would not rely on social media for a way to communicate with someone; instead, they would have better relationships and have the potential to do better in school. They wouldn’t have to worry about how many “likes/comments/followers” they have, what they ‘need’ to post and look like to be considered ‘good enough’, so they don’t get judged or become insecure about themselves. Over all, social media has a positive and negative impact on teeangers, leading them able to see themselves with it or not.
