STATE SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR I was a very fortunate spectator at last Saturday’s State Schools Spectacular at Hisense Arena, and privileged to see so many extremely talented primary and secondary students entertaining the crowd. Singers, dancers, gymnasts, magicians – all performed in a highly choreographed 3 hour show, with lighting, costumes and artistry of the highest order. Congratulations to our own twelve dancers, their teachers Jackie Rielly and Bec Andrew and parent supporters. This is truly an event they will always remember.

SCHOOL DANCES I trust everyone enjoyed the three nights of dancing at La Trobe University Union Hall. Many thanks to Sarah McQuarrie from STOMP Dancing who choreographed the dances, and trained our students over many weeks, supported by classroom teachers. Our students danced superbly, had fun and put on a great show.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTION There will be lots of activity at our school over the holidays with maintenance work on our ‘Tiger Turf’, Grounds Maintenance in the second week of the holidays via Hi-City, the installation of LED lights in various classrooms, steam cleaning of all carpet areas via our cleaning company and other minor maintenance. As always, if you observe anything of a suspicious nature, please don’t hesitate to ring the police on 000.

FINAL ASSEMBLY The final assembly of the term commences at 2.10pm this Friday, with students dismissed by 2.30pm. Term 4 resumes on Monday, October 8.

Have a great holiday, hoping but not expecting the ultimate joy for my team, but certainly wishing everyone a great break.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

TERM 3 WRAP UP It has been an incredibly busy term across the school and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our students, staff and families for their commitment to our school. Our staff have completed many hours of professional development during the term to build their capacity as teachers and deliver a comprehensive and engaging teaching program for all students. They have planned and implemented interschool sport, excursions and incursions as well as special programs and events such as Family Science Night, Book Week activities, Japanese Day and the school dance. Our dedicated ES staff have kept our school running efficiently, supported our students and teachers, kept the home/school communication lines humming and responded cheerfully to the hundreds of daily queries and questions from everyone.

Thank you to our wonderful families for supporting fundraising initiatives and special school events and for assisting across the school in many different roles such as listening to reading, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen and Garden Program, selling icy poles, working bees or as a member of School Council or one of its sub committees. We simply could not be the school we are without your support.

Our students have worked hard to demonstrate our school values and display a positive attitude to their learning. They have participated enthusiastically in the learning opportunities that have been provided this term, demonstrating a growth mindset, curiosity and willingness to give new experiences their best shot. Together, we have begun to welcomed our new 2019 Foundation students and their families into our school community and this will continue throughout term 4. I hope that all our new families as well as our existing families value the importance of working together to create and maintain a positive and inclusive Viewbank school community.

Finally, congratulations to our students and thank you to our families and staff for being part of the amazing School Dance this week. The three nights were certainly a celebration of our school community and a wonderful team effort.

Have a great holiday, stay safe and I look forward to seeing everyone in term 4.

Term 3 has been a very busy and enjoyable term for all at VPS!

The children have loved taking part in the special lunch days, Japanese Day, and shopping for Dads at the Father’s Day stall. They have shown great support for charity on Daffodil day and Footy colours day, and support for the school through the chocolate drive and Dance raffle.

The school council acknowledge that parents have had to show a lot of monetary support this term, as well as needing to remember what colour to dress your children in for which event on what day!

We would like to announce that we are starting some exciting upgrades over the term 3 holidays as a result of the tremendous support shown, and in response to the suggestions from the school survey on where to focus our fundraising efforts.

The following projects will be started over the term break:

An upgrade to all toilet facilities within the school to brighten and freshen them up. This will include, new locks, toilet seats, splashbacks, painting and floor works where required.

AND

Our Tiger Turf will also be going through its 6 monthly maintenance.

In addition, we have also started planning for the next MAJOR fundraising project for a school oval upgrade. This work will potentially involve: higher fencing to allow for more balls sports, levelling and grass restoration, and more seating and play spaces around the perimeter. We hope that all our VPS families can continue to support our fundraising activities to allow this plan to come to fruition in 2019/2020.

See you all in Term 4 – Happy Holidays

WALK TO SCHOOL 2018 This October Viewbank Primary is excited to take part in the state wide Walk to School program.

About Walk to School Every October, VicHealth’s Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids and their families to walk, ride or scoot to and from school. It’s a great way for the whole family to increase their physical activity levels. Along with the health benefits, it also reduces traffic congestion and parking around schools, helps us connect with the community and saves the environment!

Part way is okay! If you can’t walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from your school and walk, ride or scoot the rest.

Safe Routes to School Map Banyule Council has provided a Safe Routes to School Map and this year Viewbank Primary’s has convenient meeting places highlighted where families could meet in the mornings before they start their walk. Please see the map and familiarise yourself with the safest way to walk to school.

Last year more than 140,000 kids and their families took part in walk to school and with your help we can make 2018 our biggest year yet!

Year 3 Sustainability & Design Inquiry Unit Action Project - Design and work together for our planet’s future. The Year 3’s second Inquiry Unit for 2018 was all about design and sustainability. Many of the students became passionate about the sustainability issues we face and decided they would like to educate others by building a website. The students were broken up in to their groups to develop the content they wanted to include with everyone’s ideas coming through with text, photos, graphs and links to further information. This group of students would like to share their work and hope to inspire more people to work together for our planet’s future.
