The Golden Idea Competition

Hosted by the School of Management

Student teams of 1 - 4 from all over campus have an opportunity to submit proposals for creative ideas and, if chosen to move on to the final round, pitch their idea to a panel of business experts. .

November 21, 2019

The finalists will compete on November 21, 2019 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. in the McDonnell Auditorium in Scianna Hall. Everyone is invited to attend the competition. The audience will take part in selecting who wins the grand prize of $1,000 CASH! 2nd place will receive $500 and 3rd place will receive $250. Scianna Hall Movie Night

Scianna Hall hosted its first movie night in the McDonnell Auditorium during the month of October. While watching "The Intern", we encouraged students to contemplate generational differences in the workplace and the problems they can present. We discovered that there is no substitute for real world experience! We will continue to host engaging opportunities like this throughout each semester.

Interview Boot Camp

Dr. Kelli King and Mr. Chris Balaski held an interview boot camp for students interested in interviewing for sales positions in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Students learned about behavioral interview questions, competencies, answering questions in STAR format, and closing the interview.

HTM Students in Las Vegas

Hospitality and Tourism Management students attend the Global Food and Beverage Conference in Las Vegas, learning from professionals in the industry while networking.

PepsiCo/Frito-Lay

PepsiCo/Frito-Lay representatives were invited to Mr. Chris Balaski's professional selling class to act as the customer while students tried to selling them Frito-Lay displays and products. One representative would act as the store owner who was meeting with the student, while the other three would observe and take notes during the interaction. Congratulations to senior Healthcare Marketing major Jordan Riekhof for being selected as the Sales Competition winner! She received Frito-Lay swag AND will get a bag of chips with her smile on it!

Study Abroad Fair

The Study Abroad Task Force, comprised of business faculty & staff, hosted the Study Abroad Fair to promote British Studies, Asian Studies, and Italian Studies programs. Each program set up a table to answer questions and provide information to students that were interested in participating. Additionally, students that have studied abroad in year's past were there to talk about what may be holding some students back from studying abroad and how to get past these barriers. While sharing information about the Summer 2020 opportunities, each program had samples of authentic food from their country, offering a taste of what students could be eating over the summer.

Inspired Leaders Series

The Inspired Leaders Series provides industry leaders the opportunity to share their insight with and inspire the Southern Miss community. Join us as we welcome Cindy Gaddis as our speaker.

MSCPA Recipients

We are proud to announce Paige Dillistone, Kayla Jo Martin, and Jacob Jenkins as the 2019 MSCPA Scholarship recipients. Scholarships ranged from $1,000 - $2,500. Paige is in the Master of Professional Accountancy program while Kayla Jo and Jacob are pursuing their undergraduate degree in accounting.

College juniors, seniors, and graduate students representing 9 Mississippi institutions applied for the scholarships, which required submitted essays, transcripts, and resumes. The Education Foundation of the Mississippi Society of CPAs awarded $41,000 in college scholarships for the fall 2019 term. Founded in the early 1970s, the Foundation seeks to promote accounting education in Mississippi colleges and universities by helping students pursue a CPA career.

Joseph Greene Hall

Open House

Joseph Greene Hall, once the proud home of the College of Business, completed renovations in May and was named the new home of the College of Education and Human Sciences. In October, Deans Dr. Bret Becton and Dr. Trenton Gould hosted an open house to officially open the building to the public and show off the transformation!

Five students in the College of Business and Economic Development at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) have been selected to attend Beta Gamma Sigma’s Global Leadership Summit in Chicago, Ill.

  • Nichada Satasuk, Student Vice-President of Public Relations, pursuing her master's in both business administration and sport management

Happy Halloween!

Faculty, staff and students on both the Hattiesburg and the Gulf Park campuses dressed up for Halloween this year! The School of Marketing hosted a Monster Mash with a costume contest, food, candy and prizes. Check out some of the best costumes of the day!

School of Management Lead Series

The School of Management held a LEAD series event designed to provide students with leadership development programming. Over 80 students and faculty attended the session consisting of an ice breaker activity, a presentation on leadership, and a taco bar.
