Healthy Tips from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN

Dietitian for Bethlehem Area School District

The ABC Tips - Gs:

Garlic: Garlic contains a high amount of antioxidants, which helps protect the body against free radical damage (associated with cancer and other diseases). When crushing or chopping garlic, the strong smell comes from the sulfur compound allicin. Research has shown allicin can help boost your immune system, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and prevent cancer. However, it is still undetermined how much garlic you will need to consume to reap its benefits. Garlic goes great with most savory dishes, so try adding garlic to your pizza or pasta dishes.

Grapes: Grapes contain antioxidants that help repair damaged cells. Grapes also have phytochemicals, known as resveratrol, which have been known to be cardio-protective, help improve your memory, and reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. When purchasing grapes, to tell the sweetness look at the color of the grape. The darker the color means it is more sweet than pale colored grapes. Try adding grapes into your chicken salad or eat them plain for a snack.

Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is essentially yogurt that is strained to remove the liquid part (whey). This creates the thick and creamy texture Greek yogurt is known for. By removing the whey, you are left with more protein and probiotics packed in your Greek yogurt. Just because Greek yogurt is a superfood doesn’t mean it has no downsides. Next time you purchase Greek yogurt look at the label before buying. A full-fat version has about double the fat compared to a low-fat or non-fat Greek yogurt. Also look out for added sugars, which are added for extra sweetness. Try opting for a plain non-fat Greek yogurt and adding fresh berries on top to “sweeten” your yogurt.
